Chapter 20 - THE PRINCE’S FALSE CONFESSION

With five days remaining, Adrian devised a deception. He announced that the wedding would proceed and that he accepted Ella as Cinderella.

Aurelia relaxed the Moon Door enough to send emissaries into the palace. Adrian intended to capture one and learn where Cinderella’s body was held.

Ella hated the plan. Publicly wearing Cinderella’s name strengthened the covenant, even if Adrian lied.

“Truth glass measures intent,” he argued. “I know you are not her.”

“But the kingdom does not.”

She was right. Crowds celebrated the restored fairy tale, and the mark over her heart gained a seventh point. Lies had consequences beyond the liar’s private meaning.

At the betrothal rehearsal, a Hollow emissary arrived disguised as Mara. The real Mara exposed it with an iron needle hidden in her sleeve.

Captured inside a salt circle, the emissary revealed that Cinderella was no longer behind the Moon Door. Aurelia had moved her into the palace on the night Ella arrived.

“She sleeps where every bride is made beautiful,” it said.

The bridal preparation chamber contained gowns, perfumes, and a crystal bathing pool. Beneath the pool, they found the coffin from the ash-tree crypt.

It was empty again.

Inside lay a pair of human lungs still breathing beneath the water.

The physician identified the magical signature as Cinderella’s. Aurelia had separated her body into living pieces and hidden each within the palace.

To restore her, they would have to recover all seven before the eclipse.

The discovery of the separated lungs horrified even the magisters who had treated the crisis academically. The organs were alive, responsive, and bound to specific palace systems. Removing them carelessly could kill Cinderella or collapse parts of the building.

The lungs powered the ventilation shafts. The heartbeat inside the ballroom clock regulated protective wards. Her blood beneath the throne fed the glamour that made visiting diplomats perceive royal wealth as greater than it was.

Aurelia had built palace comfort from a captive woman’s body.

Adrian ordered the throne room closed. Treasury officials protested that foreign negotiations depended on the glamour.

“Then our allies have been negotiating with an illusion,” he said. “They deserve the truth before the next treaty.”

The kingdom’s debt prices rose when the glamour ended. Grain merchants demanded stronger guarantees. Adrian spent political capital securing emergency shipments with transparent accounts instead of magical appearance.

Ella saw the consequence and asked whether he regretted exposing it.

“Every truth has a cost,” he said. “That does not mean every lie was affordable.”

Working through the night, physicians and stoneworkers rerouted each palace system before removing Cinderella’s pieces. Servants who understood the old passages proved more valuable than senior ministers. Mara located the hidden valves because generations of maids had learned which walls became warm in winter.

The rescue became the work of hundreds, not a prince’s solitary quest.
