Chapter 8 - THE KISS THAT STOLE A DAY

Adrian moved Ella from confinement to the eastern guest rooms under constant guard. Publicly, the engagement remained intact. Privately, he no longer knew whether the woman across from him was victim, weapon, or both.

Ella asked him to kiss her.

“If I’m only copying what she loved,” she said, “you’ll feel the difference.”

He refused to turn affection into a test. She kissed him anyway.

For one instant, Adrian remembered a day he had never lived. He saw Cinderella at twelve years old carrying soup to her sick father. He felt her grief when Lady Tremaine sold her mother’s books. He heard a child’s promise beside a grave: I will remain kind, but I will not remain helpless.

Then Adrian woke on the floor.

Twenty-four hours had passed.

Ella sat in the corner, horrified. She now remembered Adrian’s childhood: his fear of thunder, the first horse he lost, and the secret passage he used after his father’s funeral.

Their kiss had exchanged memories.

The exchange left consequences neither could dismiss. Adrian now felt tenderness when he smelled woodsmoke, though his childhood rooms had marble hearths. Ella woke knowing the combination to the king’s private archive and the shame Adrian carried over freezing during his father’s final seizure.

She promised not to enter the archive. He promised not to question her about Cinderella’s childhood memories unless she offered them.

“We need rules,” Ella said.

“For kissing?”

“For taking pieces of each other.”

The phrase removed any romance from the moment. Orren documented consent procedures for all further magical testing: no touch without warning, no memory extraction without a witness, and no assumption that knowledge acquired through enchantment belonged to the crown.

Helena called the precautions absurd while the kingdom faced danger.

Mara answered before Adrian could. “Danger is when rules matter most, Majesty.”

Ella began keeping a book divided into two columns. On the left she wrote memories that clearly belonged to Cinderella. On the right she recorded choices she made after waking beneath the ash tree. Chocolate instead of tea. Windows open during rain. Fear of deep water. Affection for Mara. Anger when called ungrateful.

The right column was shorter.

It was also the first evidence that Ella might possess a self no spell had borrowed.

Helena called it proof of Hollow magic. Orren disagreed.

“An Echo copies what is desired,” he said. “This woman takes what is offered through intimacy. That is older magic.”

Rowan discovered someone had used Adrian’s missing day to enter the relic vault. Nothing appeared stolen—until Orren counted the royal covenant tablets.

The seventh tablet, erased from every inventory, was gone.

Surveillance runes showed the thief had Adrian’s face.
