Chapter 1 - GIVE ME BACK MY NAME

Claire Morgan’s hand was already moving when the room saw her.
The slap landed across Vanessa Morgan’s face in the first instant of silence.
Vanessa recoiled.
Crystal glasses stopped midway to lips.
A violinist lowered her bow.
Claire grabbed Vanessa’s shoulder.
“GIVE ME BACK MY NAME!”
Vanessa stared at her.
Not furious.
Not defensive.
Just stunned.
Claire ripped the Morgan family necklace from Vanessa’s neck and held it up.
“YOU STOLE MY LIFE!”
Richard Morgan rushed forward from the center table.
“WHO ARE YOU?!”
Claire whipped toward him.
She pulled an old photograph from her bag and threw it onto the banquet table.
“I’M YOUR REAL DAUGHTER!”
Richard grabbed the photograph.
A little girl.
Dark hair.
The banquet photograph Claire threw onto the table had its own history.
It came from Elise Warren’s storage box.
Not Morgan records.
That mattered.
The image showed:
Richard,
Anna,
Claire at age eight,
Evelyn,
and the mansion in the background.
On the back, Anna had written:
Claire hates that blue ribbon but her father insisted.
Richard remembered the argument instantly.
Claire had cried because the ribbon pinched.
He loosened it.
That memory was private.
Vanessa had never heard it.
When Claire mentioned the ribbon before the DNA test, Richard looked as if the floor had moved.
Grace still warned him:
“Memory is not authentication.”
But emotionally, the photograph cracked the story before science finished it.
A gap between her front teeth.
A blue ribbon.
Claire at age eight.
Richard’s face changed.
Evelyn Morgan went pale.
Vanessa remained strangely calm.
Claire turned back and shoved the necklace against her chest.
“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”
Vanessa looked down at the necklace.
Then laughed softly.
Claire froze.
“What’s so funny?”
Vanessa opened her purse.
Removed the mansion keys.
Placed them into Claire’s hand.
Then she took off the Morgan family ring and dropped it beside the keys.
Her eyes filled with relief.
“I’ve waited YEARS for you.”
Claire stared.
Vanessa closed Claire’s fingers around the keys.
“NOW EVERYTHING IS YOURS.”
She looked around the mansion.
Not like an owner.
Like a prisoner.
Then Vanessa smiled through tears.
“I’M FINALLY FREE OF THIS FAMILY.”
Evelyn’s face twisted with fear.
Richard turned toward his mother.
“Mother?”
Vanessa reached for the door.
Evelyn shouted:
“DON’T YOU DARE LEAVE!”
Vanessa stopped.
Slowly turned.
The relief vanished.
For the first time, Claire saw fear.
Not fear of losing wealth.
Fear of Evelyn.
Vanessa said:
May you like
“You don’t get to keep me anymore.”
That sentence changed the room.
