Chapter 9 - EVELYN'S BEST DEFENSE
Evelyn hired Lauren Pierce.
Her defense was stronger than Claire expected.
Evelyn admitted helping Vanessa assume Claire’s identity.
She denied doing it solely for money.
At the time, Richard was unstable.
Anna was dead.
Morgan Holdings was under attack from a collateral branch trying to break voting control.
Claire’s disappearance threatened:
jobs,
loan covenants,
family ownership.
Evelyn said:
“I thought Claire was dead.”
“Then why not declare her dead?”
“Because that would hand the trust block away.”
There.
Lauren tried to soften it.
“She believed preserving the branch also preserved assets if Claire returned.”
Grace asked:
“By inserting another child?”
Evelyn said:
“Vanessa needed a home.”
Vanessa stared.
“I needed my name.”
Evelyn replied:
“You had nothing.”
That sentence destroyed much of the humanitarian defense.
Still, some facts helped Evelyn.
Vanessa received:
elite education,
medical care,
housing,
financial support,
and later independent spending accounts.
She traveled.
She dated.
She attended college.
She was not physically imprisoned.
Lauren said:
“An adult can leave a house.”
Grace answered:
“An adult can also be coerced by identity dependency.”
