Chapter 1 - DID THAT CAMERA SEE EVERYTHING?

Frank Miller swung the wooden rolling pin into Margaret Wilson’s upper arm.

The seventy-two-year-old woman stumbled.

Before she could steady herself, the rolling pin struck her shoulder.

“GET OUT, YOU FILTHY BEGGARS!”

Margaret wrapped both arms around her grandchildren.

Emily, ten.

Noah, seven.

Lily, five.

The children screamed and pressed against her worn cream cardigan.

Frank advanced.

He jabbed the rolling pin against Margaret’s shoulder.

“THERE’S NO PLACE FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU HERE!”

Noah began sobbing.

Margaret turned her body so the children remained behind her.

Her voice broke.

“They’re hungry… just give them some bread.”

Frank shoved the restaurant door wider.

“BE HUNGRY SOMEWHERE ELSE!”

Margaret froze.

That sentence hurt more than the rolling pin.

Then a man in uniform rushed through the entrance.

Officer Daniel Reed.

He had been walking from a patrol car parked half a block away after someone called about shouting.

He saw:

Margaret’s reddened arm,

three crying children,

Frank holding the rolling pin.

“DROP IT. NOW!”

Frank lowered it.

Then immediately pointed at Margaret.

“She caused trouble!”

Daniel looked at her bruises.

Then the children.

“What trouble?”

Frank backed toward the counter.

“She came in demanding free food. She wouldn’t leave.”

Margaret opened her mouth.

Emily suddenly grabbed Officer Reed’s sleeve.

“Officer…”

She pointed through the front window.

Above the sidewalk entrance, attached to the neighboring pharmacy’s brick wall, was a security camera angled partly toward the restaurant door.

“Did that camera see everything?”

Daniel looked up.

Frank’s face changed.

Margaret saw it.

Not annoyance.

Fear.

Daniel asked:

“Mr. Miller, is that your camera?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Frank swallowed.

Daniel turned toward the children.

“Then nobody here gets to decide what it saw.”

Twenty minutes later, the pharmacy manager pulled up the recording.

It showed the doorway.

The sidewalk.

Most of the front entrance.

And before Frank ever raised the rolling pin, it showed something else.

Margaret had tried to hand him a small blue card.

Frank knocked it from her fingers.

Daniel paused the video.

“What card is that?”

Margaret looked down.

May you like

“The meal card.”

Frank stopped breathing.
