Chapter 1 - THE TOMATO

The first tomato hit Claire Morgan above the left ear.
She did not even see who threw it.
One second she was walking from the parking garage toward Morgan Meridian’s glass entrance.
The next—
red pulp exploded through her hair.
People screamed.
Not in fear.
At her.
“HOMEWRECKER!”
Another tomato hit her shoulder.
Claire flinched violently.
Her cream blouse was instantly ruined.
Phones lifted.
Twenty.
Thirty.
Maybe more.
She looked around, completely lost.
“Please... STOP!”
The crowd surged.
“YOU STOLE HER HUSBAND!”
“I DIDN’T!”
Her voice broke.
That made them louder.
Claire backed toward the entrance, shoulders curled inward, one arm over her head.
She had known something ugly was spreading online.
She had not understood how large it had become.
Three hours earlier, an anonymous account called MARRIED MEN HAVE WIVES posted a thread.
It claimed Claire had:
seduced Ethan Morgan while he was married,
used the affair to secure her executive promotion,
forced Vanessa Morgan out of the company,
and then married Ethan after “destroying” Vanessa’s life.
Photos followed.
Dates.
Screenshots.
Hotel lobby images.
A cropped company email.
Enough truth-shaped objects to make the lie feel solid.
Claire rushed inside.
Thomas Reed, the office manager, blocked her.
He looked terrified.
Not of her.
Of the crowd.
“You have to leave.”
Claire stared at him.
“What?”
“Security can’t hold the lobby.”
“You think I did this?”
“I didn’t say that.”
Her eyes filled.
“Then don’t send me back out there.”
His face collapsed.
“I was told no employee entrance until the crowd clears.”
“By who?”
He did not answer.
Security began escorting her toward the doors.
Outside, another tomato smashed against the pavement.
Claire broke.
She covered her face and cried.
Then a protester shoved a phone inches from her.
On the screen was the viral post.
Claire grabbed it.
Scrolled.
Saw one photograph.
She knew immediately.
Across the street, inside a black Mercedes, Vanessa Morgan sat comfortably with her phone in hand.
Claire looked up.
Vanessa smiled.
Into her phone she said:
“Keep filming.”
Something inside Claire changed.
She wiped her face.
Pushed through the crowd.
Ran across the street.
SLAMMED both palms against Vanessa’s window.
“YOU SET ME UP!”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
She locked the doors.
Claire stared through the glass.
Then saw the open laptop on Vanessa’s passenger seat.
A document was visible.
MORGAN MERIDIAN — AUDIT COMMITTEE RESPONSE PLAN.
Claire stopped breathing.

The protest was not about the marriage.
It was about the meeting scheduled for four o’clock.
