Chapter 1 - THE LAUNDRY ROOM

Claire Morgan heard Evan scream before she reached the laundry room.
Not a startled cry.
Pain.
Pure pain.
She ran.
Robert had one hand twisted in their nine-year-old son’s brown hair.
Evan’s white surgical bandages were loose beneath his shirt.
Robert yanked his head backward and slammed him against the side of the washing machine.
“DAD! STOP!”
Evan stumbled.
Robert grabbed a loose strip of bandage and pulled.
Evan slid across the tiled floor, crying.
“YOU’LL LEARN!”
Claire froze in the doorway.
“EVAN?!”
Robert turned.
Claire charged.
She slapped him across the face and shoved herself between them.
“GET AWAY FROM MY SON!”
Robert staggered.
Claire dropped beside Evan.
His face was wet with tears.
His breathing came in panicked gasps.
She pulled him into her arms.
“I’ve got you.”
Evan clung to her dark cardigan.
“Mommy… it hurts so much.”
Claire checked the surgical dressing.
Still attached.
Slightly shifted.
No blood.
Thank God.
She looked up at Robert.
He stood beside the dryer, breathing hard.
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
Robert pointed at Evan.
“He was lying again.”
“About what?”
Evan buried his face in Claire’s chest.
Robert said:
“He stole papers from the hospital.”
Claire frowned.
“What papers?”
“The discharge packet.”
Claire stared.
“That’s not stealing. They gave it to us.”
Robert shook his head.
“He hid part of it.”
Claire looked at Evan.
“Baby?”
Evan’s hands tightened around her shirt.
Robert stepped forward.
Claire immediately raised one arm.
“Don’t.”
Robert stopped.
Evan whispered:
“I didn’t hide it.”
Claire lowered her face toward him.
“What happened?”
Evan’s eyes went toward the overturned laundry basket.
A folded white page had fallen beneath it.
Robert saw where he was looking.
His face changed.
Claire saw it.
Not anger.
Fear.
She reached for the page.
Robert said:
“Claire, don’t.”
She picked it up anyway.
At the bottom was a handwritten hospital note:
PATIENT DISCLOSED DIFFERENT MECHANISM OF ORIGINAL INJURY. FOLLOW-UP SAFETY REVIEW REQUIRED.
Claire read it twice.
Then slowly looked at her husband.
“What does ‘different mechanism’ mean?”
Robert said nothing.
Evan started shaking harder.
May you like
And Claire realized the laundry-room assault had not begun because Evan disobeyed.
It had begun because Robert was terrified of what Evan had told the hospital.
