Chapter 6 - THE MORNING OF THE SURGERY INJURY
Evan did not tell the full story at once.
Claire stopped asking direct questions.
A child forensic interviewer handled it.
Evan said the morning began with the missing reading folder.
Robert was angry.
He told Evan:
“You make everyone carry you.”
Evan searched the kitchen.
Living room.
Garage.
The folder was in Claire’s car.
Evan started crying.
Robert told him to stop.
Evan said:
“I’m trying.”
Robert grabbed his backpack.
Threw it into the garage.
“Then go find it.”
Evan followed.
They argued.
Evan tried to walk past.
Robert grabbed his upper arm and turned him back.
Evan pulled away.
Robert shoved him.
Not down stairs.
Not into a weapon.
Into the edge of a heavy plastic storage bin.
Evan hit his abdomen.
Hard.
He fell.
Robert froze.
Evan cried.
Robert told him to stand up.
Evan said he could not.
Then Robert said:
“You’re fine.”
That sentence repeated three times.
Evan eventually stood.
Robert drove him to school.
In the car he said:
“You tripped in the garage. Understand?”
Evan nodded.
Then, as they reached school:
“Actually, if anyone asks, you fell outside.”
Later, after the nurse called him, Robert changed the location again.
Playground.
Why?
Lauren Pierce argued memory under stress.
Claire heard strategy.
A garage injury connected directly to Robert.
A playground fall did not.
Then the forensic interviewer asked Evan one final question.
“Has Dad ever told you what to say about an injury before?”
Evan nodded.
“How many times?”
He held up three fingers.
Claire’s breathing stopped.
