Chapter 1 - THE NAME INSIDE THE LOCKET

Vanessa Cross laughed before anyone else did.

That was how Lily knew the humiliation had been planned.

The ballroom at Vale House glittered beneath three crystal chandeliers. Black-tie guests stood in small islands of polished conversation. A string quartet played near the staircase. Champagne moved from hand to hand.

Lily Hart stood beside Adrian Vale in a pale blue dress she had bought for forty-two dollars at a thrift store in Queens.

She had altered the waist herself.

Vanessa pinched the fabric between two perfectly manicured fingers.

“This came from a thrift store?”

Her voice carried.

Several people turned.

Lily’s face warmed.

Vanessa looked around at the guests and smiled.

“How embarrassing.”

A few people laughed.

Not many.

Enough.

Lily looked at Adrian.

“Adrian…”

Her husband barely turned.

Thirty-two.

Dark-haired.

Perfect black tuxedo.

The man whose name controlled hotels, shipping interests, venture funds, and enough Manhattan real estate to put his face in magazines.

The man Lily had married ninety-three days earlier.

Not for love.

That was what the contract said.

One year.

Separate rooms.

Public appearances.

No claim against Vale Holdings.

A fixed settlement when the term ended.

Adrian had needed a respectable marriage before a family trust vote.

Lily had needed money for her younger brother’s rehabilitation.

It had been a transaction.

Simple.

At least that was what Adrian liked to pretend.

“You’re only my contractual wife,” he said.

The words struck harder in public.

Lily froze.

Adrian looked away.

“Don’t mistake this for love.”

Vanessa smiled.

Triumphantly.

She had been Adrian’s girlfriend once.

Maybe she still believed she should be.

Lily tightened her grip on her handbag.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You really thought you belonged here?”

Lily swallowed.

“Enough.”

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“What?”

“I said enough.”

For one second, Lily sounded stronger than she felt.

Vanessa glanced at Adrian.

He did nothing.

That gave her permission.

She slapped Lily’s handbag from her hand.

It hit the marble.

The clasp opened.

Lipstick.

Keys.

A folded receipt.

A cheap compact mirror.

And one burned silver locket.

It slid across the floor.

Everyone nearest them looked down.

Charles Vale stopped breathing.

Adrian’s father had been speaking with two board members ten feet away.

Now his face changed completely.

“WAIT!”

The room fell silent.

Charles crossed the floor faster than Lily had ever seen him move.

He dropped to one knee and picked up the locket.

His hand shook.

Lily stared.

“Mr. Vale?”

Charles turned it over.

The silver was darkened along one edge, as if it had once been in a fire.

A tiny engraving remained beneath the damage.

Charles whispered:

“Lily…”

Adrian turned instantly.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Charles did not answer.

He opened the locket.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

Too faded for Lily to identify.

Charles’s hands trembled harder.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Dad.”

Charles looked at Lily.

Not like a wealthy patriarch looking at his son’s temporary wife.

Like a man seeing a ghost.

Adrian took the locket from him.

He studied the engraving.

Then the photograph.

His face drained white.

He looked at Lily.

“Where did you get this?”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“It was my mother’s.”

Charles made a strangled sound.

Adrian looked down again.

At the name engraved inside the burned silver.

Then back at Lily.

His voice broke.

May you like

“…Lily?”

And for the first time since she entered Vale House, Vanessa looked afraid.
