Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Charles ordered the ballroom cleared in less than three minutes.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

No attempt to preserve appearances.

That alone terrified Adrian.

His father had spent forty years preserving appearances.

Board scandals.

Failed marriages.

Lawsuits.

Deaths.

Charles Vale believed dignity was not an emotion.

It was a system.

Now he locked the library doors with his own hands.

Inside were Charles, Adrian, Lily, Vanessa, and the burned locket.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“This is absurd.”

Charles turned on her so sharply she stopped.

“Leave.”

Her face changed.

“Excuse me?”

“Leave.”

“Charles—”

“Now.”

Adrian looked at her.

For once, he did not defend her.

Vanessa grabbed her evening bag and stormed out.

The library door shut.

Silence.

Charles placed the locket on the desk.

“Who was your mother?”

Lily’s throat tightened.

“Anna Hart.”

Charles closed his eyes.

Adrian stared.

“Dad?”

Charles sat down slowly.

“That wasn’t her name.”

Lily frowned.

“What?”

Charles looked at her.

“Not originally.”

Then he opened the locket.

Inside the right panel was a tiny photograph of a young woman.

Dark hair.

Sharp cheekbones.

A familiar mouth.

Lily had seen the image thousands of times.

Her mother at twenty-five.

Charles touched the photograph with one finger.

“Her name was Eleanor Vale.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“No.”

Lily stared at him.

“Vale?”

Charles nodded.

“My daughter.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Lily laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because the alternative was screaming.

“My mother wasn’t your daughter.”

Charles did not react.

“She was.”

“No.”

“She was.”

Lily stood.

“She grew up in Pennsylvania.”

Charles shook his head.

“She grew up here.”

Adrian looked at his father.

“You had a daughter?”

Charles’s face tightened.

“I had two children.”

Adrian stepped back.

“You never told me.”

“I told everyone she died.”

Lily went cold.

Charles looked at her.

“Twenty-nine years ago, Eleanor disappeared after a fire at our summer house in Connecticut.”

The burned silver edge.

Lily looked at the locket.

Charles continued.

“We found blood. Burned clothing. No body.”

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

“And you declared her dead?”

“Eventually.”

“Why?”

Charles looked away.

“Because I believed she was.”

Lily stood completely still.

“Why would she change her name?”

Charles looked at her for a long time.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Because of me.”
