Chapter 4 - THE CONTRACT WAS NEVER RANDOM
Lily had believed Adrian chose her because she was convenient.
She worked at a small nonprofit arts foundation.
No public scandal.
No rich family.
No political ties.
No reason to threaten the Vale name.
That was what Adrian’s assistant told her.
What nobody told her was that her name had appeared on a private genealogical search eighteen months earlier.
A search commissioned by Vale Family Office.
Charles denied ordering it.
Adrian denied knowing.
That left one person.
Vanessa.
She had worked as a strategy consultant to the Vale Family Office before dating Adrian.
She had access to old trust research.
And she knew Adrian needed to marry before the annual trust review.
Why?
Because the Vale Legacy Trust contained an archaic provision.
If no direct heir from Eleanor’s branch appeared by the next distribution cycle, voting authority would consolidate under Adrian’s branch.
If Eleanor had living descendants, they would control the family voting block instead.
Vanessa found Lily.
Then she did something strange.
She did not reveal her.
She introduced Lily to Adrian’s people as an ideal contract-wife candidate.
Why?
Because marriage could solve two problems at once.
If Lily signed Adrian’s prenuptial and marital waivers without knowing her lineage, those documents might later be used to argue she voluntarily renounced claims against Vale family assets.
Not automatically valid.
Not clean.
But useful.
A legal fog.
Adrian stared at the research report.
“You knew her identity?”
Vanessa had left the house.
But her emails did not.
Family counsel retrieved them overnight.
One message from Vanessa to private genealogist Steven Marks:
Do not use the Vale name in direct communications. Confirm maternal line only.
Another:
If she enters the family voluntarily under contract, the optics become easier.
Charles read that sentence twice.
Then shut the laptop.
Adrian looked sick.
“I didn’t know.”
Lily looked at him.
“No.”
He flinched.
“You didn’t know who I was.”
“No.”
“But you knew the contract was designed to make sure I could never claim anything.”
“Yes.”
That mattered.
Adrian was not part of Vanessa’s hidden-identity scheme.
But he had still married a financially vulnerable woman and made sure she understood she was temporary.
