Chapter 5 - VANESSA'S COUNTERATTACK
Vanessa did not collapse.
She hired Abigail Stone.
One of the best trust litigators in New York.
Then she attacked the weak points.
Was Lily definitely Eleanor’s daughter?
No DNA test yet.
Was Anna Hart definitely Eleanor Vale?
The locket and photographs suggested yes.
Not enough.
Could Eleanor have legally renounced her trust rights before disappearing?
Possibly.
Charles’s records were incomplete.
Could Lily’s marriage contract waive claims?
Maybe not trust beneficiary rights directly, but Vanessa argued it showed Lily entered the Vale family with full awareness she would receive no property.
That was misleading.
Still strategically useful.
Then came the ugliest allegation.
Vanessa claimed Lily knew.
That she had targeted Adrian.
That the thrift-store dress was performance.
That the modest nonprofit job was part of a long con.
The tabloids loved it.

CONTRACT BRIDE OR CALCULATED CLAIMANT?
Lily stopped reading after the second headline.
Adrian did not.
He confronted Vanessa at her attorney’s office.
“You set this up.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I protected you.”
“You used Lily.”
“I brought you the one woman who could have destroyed your inheritance and put her under contract.”
Adrian stared.
“That sentence is supposed to help you?”
Vanessa leaned forward.
“You think she loves you?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“She signed for money.”
“So did you.”
That landed.
Vanessa smiled.
“You called her your contract wife before I ever did.”
Adrian left without answering.
Because she was right.
He had not known Lily’s identity.
