Chapter 9 - ADRIAN ASKS FOR NOTHING

The contract marriage still had six months remaining.
Lily could have left.
Legally, emotionally, socially.
Adrian expected her to.
She moved out anyway.
Not as punishment.
For clarity.
She rented a two-bedroom apartment near her old nonprofit office.
No Vale driver.
No household staff.
No diamonds.
Adrian visited once.
He stood in the doorway holding a paper bag.
“What’s that?”
“Chinese food.”
“That seems suspicious.”
“I was told normal people bring food when apologizing.”
Lily almost smiled.
He set it down.
Then said:
“I’m sorry.”
“For Vanessa?”
“For me.”
That mattered.
“I let people humiliate you because the contract gave me a way to pretend your feelings were outside the deal.”
Lily looked at him.
“Yes.”
“I thought if I never promised love, I couldn’t betray it.”
“You can betray dignity without promising love.”
Adrian nodded.
“I know.”
He did not ask her to come back.
Did not ask her to forgive him.
Did not mention the trust.
He simply left.
Over the next months, Adrian supported governance reforms even when they reduced his power.
He gave deposition testimony against Vanessa in the civil action over concealed lineage research.
He admitted publicly that Lily had not known her identity.
That killed the gold-digger story.
Vanessa’s consulting firm lost Vale contracts.
She faced civil liability for misuse of confidential family records and deceptive conduct.
No prison.
May you like
No melodramatic ruin.
Just consequences.
