Chapter 1 - GRACE?

Victoria Whitfield had Noah by the arm.

The eight-year-old boy was crying, twisting desperately away from her grip.

“Stop pulling!”

Victoria raised one hand.

Before it came down, a woman in a torn gray coat rushed from the sidewalk.

She threw herself between them.

“DON’T TOUCH HIM!”

Grace wrapped both arms around Noah and turned her own body into a shield.

Victoria stared at the woman as if dirt itself had spoken.

“Get away from my son, you filth!”

She grabbed Grace’s coat and shoved her backward.

Grace stumbled onto the winter pavement.

Her ripped coat slipped from one shoulder.

Then she rushed forward again and pulled Noah behind her.

“Leave him alone!”

Victoria raised her hand.

The hotel doors burst open.

Ethan Whitfield ran outside.

“STOP!”

He seized Victoria’s arm and pulled her away.

“What are you doing?” Victoria shouted.

Ethan ignored her.

He dropped beside the trembling woman and reached for her hand.

“Let me help you up.”

Grace hesitated.

Then accepted.

Her sleeve slid backward.

A crescent-shaped birthmark appeared on the inside of her right wrist.

Ethan stopped breathing.

His fingers tightened.

He turned her wrist slowly.

The mark was exactly where it had always been.

The same pale crescent he had kissed on their honeymoon.

The same mark he had traced when she was pregnant.

His face drained white.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Why are you staring at her?”

Ethan looked from the birthmark to the woman’s face.

Under dirty hair.

Exhaustion.

Eight years of hard living.

Still there.

“Grace?”

The woman froze.

Noah stared between them.

Victoria’s expression changed from anger to panic.

Grace pulled her hand away.

“You know me?”

Ethan’s voice broke.

“You’re my wife.”

Victoria whispered sharply:

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

Then at Noah.

Then back at Grace.

“No,” he said, almost to himself. “You were supposed to be gone.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“So were you.”

May you like

And Ethan understood instantly that whatever story he had lived for eight years—

Grace had been told a different one.
