Chapter 5 - VICTORIA KNEW

Victoria met Grace six years earlier.

Not by accident.

Margaret called her.

At the time Victoria was Ethan’s fiancée.

Margaret said:

“Someone unstable from Ethan’s past has appeared.”

Victoria went to the estate.

Grace stood outside the gates.

Thin.

Angry.

Holding a folder.

Victoria approached because Margaret refused.

Grace said:

“I am Noah’s mother.”

Victoria already knew that much.

Ethan had told her Grace left when Noah was a baby.

Then Grace said:

“I didn’t leave.”

Victoria’s stomach dropped.

She asked for proof.

Grace showed:

birth certificate copy,

hospital bracelet,

old family photos,

returned letters.

Enough to raise questions.

Victoria should have told Ethan.

Instead she asked Margaret.

Margaret said:

“Grace changes stories whenever she wants money.”

Then:

“She signed away temporary custody and abandoned follow-up.”

Technically distorted.

Grace had signed temporary care papers.

She had failed to complete a family-services meeting later.

Why?

She never received the rescheduled notice after changing shelters.

The record looked worse than the reality.

Victoria chose the version that protected her future marriage.

She told Grace:

“Ethan has moved on.”

Grace asked:

“Does he know I’m here?”

Victoria lied.

“Yes.”

Grace’s face changed.

Then Victoria said:

“He doesn’t want you upsetting Noah.”

Another lie.

Grace left.

Ethan sat in the hotel conference room six years later hearing all of it.

He looked at Victoria.

“You told me you never met her.”

Victoria cried.

“I thought I was protecting Noah.”

“No.”

Grace’s voice was quiet.

“You were protecting your place.”

Victoria turned.

“You had already vanished.”

Grace stood.

“I was homeless.”

“You could have found a lawyer.”

Grace laughed.

“With what?”

The room went silent.

Then Noah, who had been taken upstairs briefly and returned with a child-care supervisor because Ethan refused to keep him outside the truth indefinitely, stood in the doorway.

He heard the last word.

“Homeless?”

Everyone froze.

Noah looked at Grace.

Then Victoria.

Then Ethan.

“Is she my mom?”

No one answered quickly enough.

Noah began crying.

That was how he learned.

Not through a planned conversation.

Through adults who had delayed truth too long.
