Chapter 3 - THE FIRST NIGHT

After Ethan recognized her, Grace tried to run.
Not fast.
Her shoes were worn.
Her body exhausted.
Ethan stepped in front of her.
“Please.”
Grace recoiled.
“Don’t touch me.”
He stopped.
Noah stood behind him, crying quietly.
Victoria had gone silent.
Then Noah asked:
“Dad… who is she?”
Ethan could not answer casually.
Grace looked at the boy.
Her face collapsed.
He had Ethan’s eyes.
Her nose.
A tiny cleft in his chin that had been visible even as a newborn.
Grace whispered:
“Noah.”
The boy stepped backward.
“How do you know my name?”
Victoria snapped:
“Enough. She’s confused.”
Grace turned on her.
“I heard you call him Noah.”
Victoria flinched.
That was true.
Ethan said:
“She’s coming inside.”
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because she’s unstable.”
Grace went still.
The word.
Same word.
Eight years later.
Same family vocabulary.
Ethan heard it too.
His expression changed.
He took out his phone.
“Security can take Noah upstairs.”
“No,” Grace said immediately.
Everyone looked at her.
She took one step back.
“I’m not going anywhere with Whitfield security.”
Ethan understood.
Then he called hotel management and asked for a private conference room near the lobby, not upstairs.
Public enough to leave.
Warm enough to talk.
He asked a female hotel manager to remain.
Grace agreed.
Inside, Ethan gave her water.
She drank too fast.
Then he asked:
“Where have you been?”
Grace laughed bitterly.
“Looking for my son.”
Ethan stared.
“For eight years?”
“Not every day.”
The honesty hurt.
Then:
“For the first two, yes.”
“What happened after that?”
Grace looked down at her dirty hands.
“I ran out of money.”
Silence.
May you like
Then she looked directly at Ethan.
“And your family made sure nobody believed I had a reason to come back.”
