Chapter 1 - THE WEDDING JULIAN DIDN'T QUESTION

Three hours before Julian Vale was supposed to marry Vanessa Hart, he believed the most dangerous thing waiting inside Saint Alden Cathedral was his own doubt.

It was not fear of commitment. Julian had spent most of his adult life making decisions quickly. At thirty-six, he ran Vale Hospitality with the same discipline his father, Adrian, had demanded from him since childhood. He had closed acquisitions during recessions, fired executives twice his age, and survived years of public criticism after inheriting a family company everyone assumed had been handed to him without effort.

Marriage should have been simpler.

Vanessa made everything appear simple.

She was polished, intelligent, socially effortless, and almost impossible to embarrass. She knew which investors Julian disliked before he said their names. She remembered the birthdays of employees he barely knew. She could walk into a hostile charity board meeting and leave with the chairwoman thanking her.

Everyone loved her.

Almost everyone.

Eleanor Vale, Julian's aunt and the woman who had raised him from age eight, had never trusted Vanessa completely.

"She studies rooms before she enters them," Eleanor once said.

Julian laughed. "So do you."

"Yes. That's why I notice when someone else does."

Eleanor's concerns intensified after Adrian died six months earlier.

Adrian's death had been sudden. A cardiac event in his private study. No scandal. No investigation. No reason for Julian to question it.

Then came the estate.

Adrian left Julian majority control of Vale Hospitality, the family brownstone in Manhattan, investment accounts, and a private collection of commercial properties. Vanessa received nothing directly, which she claimed not to care about.

"I want you," she told Julian. "Not your father's money."

Yet in the months before the wedding, Vanessa became strangely interested in trust structures.

Which shares would become marital property?

Would Julian's voting control pass automatically to a spouse if he died?

Why had Adrian retained a separate attorney, Thomas Bell, to amend certain documents shortly before his death?

Julian answered what he knew and dismissed the rest.

Then Thomas Bell vanished.

His office told Julian he had taken emergency leave.

Eleanor did not believe it.

The morning of the wedding, she arrived at Julian's hotel suite carrying an old photograph.

A woman stood beside Adrian twenty-eight years earlier.

She had dark hair then.

A soft smile.

Julian recognized her instantly, though he had not seen the photograph in years.

Mara Vale.

His mother.

According to everything Julian had been told, Mara died when he was eight.

The photograph itself was not unusual.

What Eleanor showed him next was.

On the back, in fresh blue ink, someone had written:

SHE IS ALIVE.

Julian stared at the words.

"Who gave you this?"

"It was under my hotel-room door."

"Vanessa?"

"I don't know."

Julian looked at his aunt.

Eleanor's face had gone pale.

"Julian, I need to tell you something about the night your mother disappeared."

Before she could continue, the cathedral coordinator rushed into the suite.

"Mr. Vale, there's a problem at the church."

"What kind of problem?"

The coordinator hesitated.

"Your bride is with an unidentified woman."

Eleanor slowly closed her hand around the photograph.

Then Julian's phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

Her voice was breathless.

"Julian, don't come inside yet."

May you like

Behind her, he heard something strike stone.

And a woman cry out.
