Chapter 5 - THE FALSE DOCUMENT

Mara did not run from the problem.
She demanded the document be examined again.
"I received it from Thomas Bell."
Adrian's missing estate attorney.
Mara explained Thomas contacted her after Adrian's death.
He said Adrian had prepared a package before dying.
Thomas feared someone inside the Vale family was monitoring him.
He gave Mara the codicil two weeks earlier.
Then vanished.
Julian's security team searched Thomas's apartment.
Everything appeared normal.
No forced entry.
No luggage missing.
His passport remained in a drawer.
Vanessa suggested Thomas had embezzled client funds and disappeared voluntarily.
Conveniently, a bank notified Julian's attorneys that Thomas had transferred $380,000 from a client escrow account two days before vanishing.
The evidence made him look corrupt.
Mara insisted it had been planted.
Vanessa called that predictable.
Julian began to understand what made Vanessa dangerous.
She never needed him to believe her completely.
She only needed every alternative to be uncertain.
Meanwhile, the canceled wedding became public.
Press outlets reported an "unidentified family dispute."
Vanessa refused interviews, which made her appear dignified.
Julian's silence looked suspicious.
The board scheduled an emergency governance meeting.
If Julian lost confidence there, Vanessa would not need the marriage at all.
Eleanor offered to testify that Vanessa had manipulated her email.
Julian refused to rely on testimony.
"Everyone in this family lies."
Eleanor flinched.
He did not apologize.
Mara asked to see Adrian's private study.
Julian took her there.
She walked slowly through the room, touching nothing.
At the desk, she noticed a scratch beneath the bottom drawer.
She smiled faintly.
"Adrian always hid things badly."
A concealed compartment held a small key.
No note.
No label.
Just a number engraved into the metal.
418.
Julian traced it to a private records facility outside the city.
Box 418 had been rented by Adrian through a shell name.
Inside were old psychiatric reports concerning Mara.
The reports described delusions, paranoia, financial obsession, and threats against Adrian.
Mara read them without surprise.
"They're false."
Then Julian noticed the physician signature.
Dr. Samuel Hart.
Vanessa's father.
Not Douglas Hart.
Samuel Hart.
Douglas had apparently used a middle name professionally for decades.
Vanessa had told Julian her father was a consultant.
She had never told him he was once a psychiatrist.
The records showed Douglas/Samuel Hart had signed Mara's commitment papers twenty-eight years ago.
Julian looked at Vanessa's family history again.
His bride's father had helped Adrian erase Mara.
And Vanessa had somehow entered Julian's life three decades later.
Before Julian could confront her, his phone rang.
Vanessa herself.
"You found Box 418," she said.
Julian froze.
No one outside the room knew that.
Vanessa continued calmly.
"Don't open the red file."
Mara looked toward a sealed red folder at the bottom of the box.
Julian opened it anyway.
Inside was a photograph of Vanessa at age seven.
She was standing beside Adrian Vale.

And Adrian's handwritten note said:
MY DAUGHTER.
