Chapter 3 - THE MOTHER WHO NEVER DIED

Julian canceled the wedding in less than ten minutes.
Vanessa did not scream.
She did not beg.
She did something much more effective.
She asked him to wait.
"You're in shock. Don't make permanent decisions because of a stranger."
Julian stared at her.
"She is not a stranger."
"You don't know that yet."
The line was cruel because it was rational.
Mara's identity had to be verified.
Julian wanted certainty.
Vanessa wanted delay.
They both got what they wanted.
A private physician examined Mara while Julian's attorney arranged an emergency DNA test. Eleanor remained in a cathedral conference room under Julian's security because he refused to let her leave before explaining herself.
Mara could barely speak for long periods.
Years of illness and recent treatment had weakened her, but her mind was clear.
"I never left you," she told Julian.
Julian wanted to believe her.
He also wanted to hate someone immediately.
Eleanor was the easiest target.
She finally explained.
Twenty-eight years earlier, Mara had discovered Adrian diverting corporate money into an offshore fund controlled through his brother, Victor Vale.
Mara threatened divorce.
Then she disappeared.
Julian had been told she died in a coastal car accident.
The truth was worse.
Adrian used his influence to have Mara committed under a false psychiatric emergency after she confronted him publicly.
A doctor certified her unstable.
Within weeks, Adrian moved her to a private treatment facility out of state.
Eleanor claimed she did not initially know.
"When did you learn?" Julian asked.
"Six years later."
"And you left her there?"
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"Adrian told me if I fought him, he'd take you away from me and put you in boarding school overseas."
"You chose access to me over freeing her."
"I chose what I thought kept you safe."
Julian laughed once.
It sounded nothing like humor.
Mara corrected Eleanor.
"That's not the whole reason."
Eleanor looked at her.
Mara continued.
"You were receiving money."
Julian turned.
Eleanor's silence answered first.
Adrian had paid her through a family trust.
One hundred thousand dollars a year.
At first Eleanor said it supported Julian's care.
Mara shook her head.
"You were paid to stay quiet."
Julian felt sick.
Vanessa's attorney arrived before the DNA result.
Vanessa now claimed Julian had publicly humiliated her, physically shoved her, and terminated the ceremony based on an unverified accusation.
She threatened a civil action.
Smart.
She was building leverage immediately.
The DNA result arrived at 7:12 p.m.
99.99 percent probability of parent-child relationship.
Mara was his mother.
Julian sat alone for several minutes afterward.
Then Mara placed an envelope on the table.
"I came today because your father left something for you."
Julian opened it.
Inside was a handwritten codicil bearing Adrian's signature.
It transferred a controlling block of Vale Hospitality shares away from Julian upon marriage to Vanessa.
Not to Vanessa.
To a holding company Julian had never heard of.
Harrow Crest Partners.
Julian looked at Mara.
May you like
"Why would my father do this?"
Mara whispered, "Because Harrow Crest belongs to Vanessa."
