Chapter 10 - ELEANOR'S ORIGINAL SIN

Eleanor confessed.

Twenty-eight years earlier, Adrian convinced her Mara was dangerous.

He said Mara planned to flee with Julian and disappear overseas.

He gave Eleanor sedatives prescribed by Douglas.

Eleanor secretly mixed them into Mara's tea before a family dinner.

Mara became confused and disoriented.

Adrian used the episode as evidence for emergency commitment.

Eleanor believed the hospitalization would last days.

It lasted years.

"I tried to undo it," Eleanor cried.

"When?" Julian asked.

"Too late."

Mara sat silently.

Her pain was quieter than rage.

Eleanor had spent decades caring for Julian partly from guilt.

The revelation shattered what remained of their relationship.

Vanessa leaked the cassette before Julian could decide what to do with it.

The public story shifted again.

Now the Vale family looked rotten from every direction.

Adrian corrupt.

Douglas unethical.

Eleanor complicit.

Mara victimized.

Julian inherited the wreckage.

Vale Hospitality's board demanded he step aside temporarily.

He refused.

Vanessa wanted exactly that.

A weakened Julian created space for Harrow Crest to buy distressed shares.

Her financial team began accumulating stock through intermediaries.

She was no longer trying to marry into control.

She was buying it during the scandal she helped accelerate.

Julian recognized the elegance of the plan.

If the wedding succeeded, she gained access.

If it failed, chaos lowered the company's value.

Either outcome benefited her.

He countered by announcing a special independent audit of all family-linked transactions.

That move hurt him financially in the short term but removed Vanessa's ability to claim he was hiding something.

Caroline unexpectedly supported him.

Not because she trusted him.

Because the audit could expose what happened to Claire.

The alliance shifted again.

Vanessa lost Caroline and responded by targeting Mara.

She produced a contract suggesting Mara had accepted five million dollars from Adrian twelve years earlier to remain legally dead.

Mara denied it.

The signature looked real.

Julian's experts found no obvious forgery.

Then Mara remembered signing blank release forms at the clinic.

Adrian's representatives had used them to create later agreements.

Impossible to prove easily.

Vanessa did not need proof.

Only doubt.

Then Noah Pierce, Julian's missing chief of staff, appeared at a police station with an attorney.

He requested immunity.

Julian's investigators met him.

Noah admitted Vanessa had paid him.

He had accessed Eleanor's email.

He had leaked board information.

He had helped move Adrian's private records.

But he denied any role in Adrian's death.

"Who killed him?" Julian asked.

Noah looked frightened.

"I don't know if anyone did."

"What do you know?"

"Vanessa was in the house that night."

Vanessa had claimed she was at a charity dinner.

Noah continued.

"She left before the ambulance came."

Julian's hands clenched.

Then Noah added:

"But Mara was there too."

May you like

Julian turned toward his mother.

Mara had never told him she saw Adrian the night he died.
