Chapter 4 - THE BRIDE'S SECOND COMPANY

Vanessa denied owning Harrow Crest.
She did not merely deny it.
She produced records.
The holding company was officially controlled by a Delaware trust whose beneficiary was a retired accountant named Martin Keene.
No Vanessa Hart.
No direct payment.
No obvious connection.
Julian's forensic team dug deeper.
Keene once worked for Vanessa's father, Douglas Hart.
Douglas had been a restructuring consultant.
He also served briefly as an adviser to Adrian Vale fifteen years earlier.
Now the story gained another branch.
Vanessa said Julian was looking for conspiracies because Mara had destabilized him.
She released no public statement.
Instead, she privately contacted two Vale Hospitality board members.
She warned them Julian was acting irrationally.
Within twenty-four hours, the board requested medical confirmation that Julian remained fit to serve as chief executive.
Julian understood immediately.
Vanessa was attacking confidence, not ownership.
If directors feared instability, his voting power might not matter.
He confronted her at the family townhouse.
"How long have you known Mara was alive?"
Vanessa looked exhausted rather than frightened.
"Three months."
Julian stared.
She admitted hiring an investigator after finding unusual payments in Adrian's estate records.
The investigator found Mara.
Vanessa claimed she intended to tell Julian after the wedding.
"Why after?"
"Because your father was dead, you were barely functioning, and Eleanor begged me not to destroy you before the ceremony."
Julian turned toward Eleanor.
His aunt looked genuinely stunned.
"That's a lie."
Vanessa handed Julian printed messages.
The sender appeared to be Eleanor.
PLEASE WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE WEDDING.
HE CANNOT HANDLE THIS NOW.
Eleanor denied writing them.
Vanessa expected that.
She had already preserved metadata.
Julian's experts found the messages originated from Eleanor's actual account.
But one login came from a device Eleanor did not recognize.
Someone had accessed her email.
Again, Vanessa built plausible deniability inside technical truth.
Then Julian asked the question that mattered most.
"Why were you beating Mara?"
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Because she told me she had proof I killed your father."
Julian went completely still.
Mara had not told him that.
When confronted, Mara admitted it.
She believed Adrian had begun trying to correct his old crimes before he died.
He contacted her secretly two months before his death.
He apologized.
He promised to expose the offshore accounts and restore her legal identity.
Then Adrian died.
Mara suspected Vanessa because one week earlier Vanessa visited the private clinic where Mara had lived under another name.
Vanessa denied visiting.
Mara had no photograph.
No video.
Only a nurse who remembered a blonde woman.
Weak evidence.
Vanessa understood that too.
She looked directly at Julian.
"Your mother arrives after twenty-eight years with forged-looking papers, accusations, and no clean evidence. Think before you decide which woman is manipulating you."
Julian hated that the warning made sense.
That evening, his attorneys authenticated Adrian's codicil.
The signature was real.
But the codicil contained a date four days after Adrian's death.
Someone had taken a genuine signature and placed it on a false document.
The person who brought it to Julian was Mara.

And now Julian had to ask whether his mother had been framed—
or whether she had lied to him within hours of coming back.
