Chapter 14 - THE LAST DEFENSE
Vanessa was arrested for conspiracy, obstruction, evidence tampering, and assault.
Not murder.
The Adrian investigation remained uncertain.
Her attorney attacked the messages.
He claimed Thomas had fabricated them.
Vanessa admitted discussing Mara but said "handle her" meant legal action.
She admitted hating Adrian but denied harming him.
The sedative in Adrian's blood remained unexplained.
Then Douglas Hart requested to speak with Julian.
He was dying and wanted to clear his conscience.
Years earlier, Vanessa had asked him detailed questions about sedatives.
Not unusual for a daughter raised by a psychiatrist.
But one month before Adrian's death, she asked specifically how a certain prescription would affect someone with Adrian's heart condition.
Douglas refused to answer.
He told police only after Vanessa was arrested.
Vanessa called him a vindictive father trying to save himself.
Again, credible motive to lie.
The final breakthrough came from the cathedral.
Not the main aisle camera.
That camera was offline, exactly as Vanessa said.
But Saint Alden's organ system used a separate maintenance camera aimed toward the side corridor.
It had captured Vanessa arriving forty minutes before the ceremony.
Thomas Bell entered ten minutes later.
Then Mara.
Vanessa had claimed she encountered Mara unexpectedly.
False.
She had arranged the meeting.
Audio was poor but partially recoverable.
Thomas could be heard saying:
"She knows about Adrian."
Vanessa answered:
"Then she doesn't leave until I know what she has."
That established coordination.
Still not murder.
Julian accepted something he hated.
He might never know exactly what happened to his father.
Adrian had harmed people.
Vanessa had lied.
Thomas had forged evidence.
Douglas had manipulated patients.
Eleanor had betrayed Mara.
Every witness was compromised.
Justice would be incomplete.
Then Mara remembered Adrian's smartwatch.
He wore it constantly.
Estate inventories said it had been lost.
Julian searched old device backups.
One health-data archive remained in cloud storage.
It recorded Adrian's heart rate the night he died.
More importantly, a paired voice-assistant function had accidentally cached twelve seconds of audio after detecting a wake phrase.
The recording began with Adrian coughing.
Vanessa's voice:
"You should have left my mother alone."
Adrian:
"What did you put in that drink?"
Then Vanessa:
"Enough to make you listen."
The recording ended.
Medical experts could not prove the dose caused death.
But combined with toxicology, it supported a poisoning charge.
Vanessa's attorney offered a different explanation.
She had given Adrian his prescribed sedative at his request, then argued with him afterward.
No bottle was recovered.
No witness saw administration.
The prosecution remained difficult.
Vanessa was offered a plea covering financial crimes, conspiracy, assault, and reckless administration of medication.
She could avoid a murder trial.
She accepted.
Julian thought she had finally surrendered.
Then her attorney delivered one final condition.
Vanessa wanted to speak privately with Mara before sentencing.
Mara agreed.
Against Julian's advice.
The two women sat across from each other in a secure interview room.
Vanessa looked at Mara for a long time.
Then smiled faintly.
"You still don't know why Adrian brought me into Julian's life."
Mara's face changed.
Vanessa leaned forward.

And she slid a sealed letter across the table bearing Adrian Vale's handwriting.
