Chapter 4 - MARGARET HAD BEEN SAYING NO FOR MONTHS
The intersection was not the beginning.
It was the first time Jason’s behavior happened in public.
At home, it had grown slowly.
A missing checkbook.
A password changed.
Mail opened before Margaret saw it.
A credit card she did not request.
Jason saying:
“I’m helping.”
Then:
“You forget things.”
Then:
“You don’t understand finance anymore.”
Margaret began doubting herself.
That was the worst part.
Not fear.
Confusion.
One afternoon she found a brokerage transfer request printed on her desk.
$240,000.
Destination:
Miller Growth Ventures LLC.
Jason’s company.
Her signature line blank.
When she confronted him, he smiled.
“It’s an investment.”
“I didn’t approve it.”
“You would have.”
“No.”
He became angry.
Then gentle.
Then angry again.
“I’m trying to protect the family.”
Margaret heard that phrase so often it lost meaning.
Protect the family.
Family meant Jason.
When Emily objected, Jason accused her of manipulating their mother.
When Margaret’s attorney asked questions, Jason called him “outdated.”
When a bank officer suggested independent review, Jason moved Margaret’s accounts to another branch.
Each action alone looked explainable.
Together, they formed a pattern.
