Chapter 5 - EMILY HAD BEEN TRYING TO WARN HER

Margaret’s daughter Emily arrived from Cincinnati the second morning.

Forty-one.

School counselor.

Divorced.

Two children.

She walked into the hospital room, saw her mother alive, and started crying before reaching the bed.

Then the crying turned into anger.

“I told you.”

Margaret flinched.

Emily immediately regretted it.

“No. Sorry. I’m sorry.”

She sat beside the bed.

Jason had been pressuring her too.

He told Emily that Margaret planned to disinherit her.

He sent screenshots supposedly showing draft trust amendments.

He said if Emily signed a family settlement, he would “protect her share.”

She refused.

Then he stopped speaking to her.

Margaret stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“I did.”

Margaret remembered.

Three phone calls.

Two emails.

One lunch where Emily said:

“Mom, something is wrong with Jason.”

Margaret answered:

“He’s under pressure.”

You know how he is.

Another family phrase that turned danger into personality.

Emily reached into her bag.

“I brought something.”

A folder.

Inside were emails Jason sent her.

One line stood out.

Once Mom signs, I control the distributions. Then we can stop pretending she gets final say.

Margaret read it twice.

Then closed the folder.

Her son had not pushed her because he snapped.

He pushed her after a failed financial plan.

That distinction changed everything.
