Margaret hired the best defense attorney in the state.
Her strategy was disciplined.
Do not deny obvious documents.
Reinterpret them.
“Force the issue” meant confront Claire with the loan.
“Daniel will deliver” meant negotiate marital consent.
The private equity discussions were exploratory.
The postnup draft came from legitimate estate planning.
The family agreement was contingency planning.
Every bad document became normal wealth management with unfortunate wording.
Then Margaret attacked the prosecution’s witnesses.
Ashley admitted deleting footage.
Luke admitted financial desperation.
Daniel admitted assault and fraud.
Rosa had stolen nothing but had a compromised record.
Claire had professional misconduct in her past.
No pure witnesses.
No clean family.
That was Margaret’s strongest point.
But fraud cases do not require pure people.
They require records.
Vincent Ross became the weak link.
Investigators found billing entries for “signature adaptation,” “narrative preparation,” and “digital continuity.”
He claimed legitimate meanings.
His assistant disagreed.
She testified that “signature adaptation” meant recreating Claire’s signature on documents.
Vincent tried to blame Margaret.
Margaret blamed Daniel.
Daniel blamed both.
The conspiracy split into self-defense.
Claire watched the hearing from the back.
Margaret glanced at her only once.
No fear.
Then Claire received a letter in the mail.
Handwritten.
No return address.
YOU THINK DANIEL IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO TOUCHED YOUR LIFE WITHOUT PERMISSION.
Inside was a copy of an employment background report from ten years earlier.
Claire had applied for a senior role at another company before meeting Daniel.
She never got it.
The report included a negative reference.
Anonymous.
The language sounded familiar.
“Controlling.”
“Emotionally inflexible.”
“Difficult with collaborative authority.”
The same themes Margaret later used.
Claire checked dates.
Margaret had served on the foundation board connected to that employer.
Had Margaret known Claire before Daniel did?
Maya investigated.
The answer was yes.
Margaret had met Claire once at a charity technology event eleven years earlier.
Claire barely remembered.
Margaret did.
Emails showed she researched Claire’s company afterward.
Then, two years later, Daniel “accidentally” met Claire at a fundraising gala.
Claire had always believed it was chance.
It was not.
Margaret introduced Daniel to her deliberately.

Not love.
