Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY AGREEMENT
Daniel was not arrested immediately.
Claire hated that.
The police needed more.
The prosecutor wanted stronger evidence of intent.
Daniel remained at the lake house under no-contact conditions.
He hired a crisis communications firm.
No public statements.
No attacks.
No emotional interviews.
Just one written line:
This was a tragic accident during a private marital disagreement. Daniel is cooperating fully.
The restraint made him look credible.
Claire filed for divorce.
Daniel had prepared for that too.
His lawyers produced a postnuptial agreement dated eighteen months earlier.
It gave Daniel a percentage of Claire’s vested stock in the event of divorce.
Claire had never signed it.
The signature looked real.
Again.
Her digital identity had been used.
Maya ordered forensic review.
The signature came from an authentic corporate document.
Lifted cleanly.
Daniel claimed he believed Claire had signed electronically through their estate attorney.
The estate attorney?
Vincent Ross.
Claire recognized the name.
He was Margaret’s longtime adviser.
A family loyalist.
Vincent claimed the agreement came through Claire’s email.
The sending address was hers.
The login originated from the lake house.
Eighteen months earlier.
The family had been planning for divorce long before Claire realized the marriage was failing.
Then Maya found another document.
A private family agreement between Daniel, Margaret, Ashley, and Daniel’s brother, Luke.
If Daniel received stock from Claire in divorce, he agreed to place half into a voting trust controlled by Margaret.
Claire stared at the page.
“This was never about Daniel wanting security.”
“No,” Maya said. “It was about the family gaining access to your company.”
Daniel denied knowledge of the final version.
He claimed Margaret changed terms after he signed.
For once, Claire believed part of his explanation.
Daniel had always been weak around his mother.
But weakness did not make him innocent.
Then Rebecca contacted Claire again.
She had heard Margaret say something after the fall.
“Not here. Not like this.”
Claire frowned.
“To Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“What did it mean?”
“I don’t know.”
Rebecca agreed to give a formal statement.
The next morning, she withdrew.
Maya asked why.
Rebecca said she had remembered incorrectly.
Claire called her personally.
Rebecca sounded terrified.
“Please stop asking.”
“Did Margaret threaten you?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Rebecca started crying.
“My husband’s business loan was called in this morning.”
Claire went still.
The loan came from a community bank partly owned by a Bennett family investment partnership.
Margaret had leverage over Rebecca’s husband.
Not through threats.
Through debt.
Claire finally understood the family’s real power.
They did not silence people by shouting.
They rearranged consequences.
Then Rebecca whispered:
“I wasn’t the only person upstairs.”
“Who else?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“Luke.”
Daniel’s brother.
Luke had claimed he was outside by the lake when Claire fell.
