Chapter 6 - THE LOAN THAT DIDN'T EXIST
The forged loan application became the center of the financial case.
Daniel had attempted to borrow four million dollars secured against Claire’s stock.
But the bank never funded it.
That gave Daniel room.
No theft completed.
No loss.
Just paperwork.
Maya traced the application process.
The first draft came from Vincent Ross.
The financial projections came from Luke’s company.
Ashley provided Claire’s identification scan.
Margaret supplied the family trust information.
Daniel submitted the final package.
Everyone touched part.
No one owned the whole.
That fragmentation looked deliberate.
Claire confronted Luke after learning his role.
He admitted providing projections but claimed Daniel told him Claire approved the financing.
Luke had doubted it.
He did it anyway.
“I needed the contract.”
Claire stared.
“Your business?”
“It was failing.”
Margaret had promised to guarantee Luke’s bank debt if he helped.
Another leash.
Luke agreed to cooperate with prosecutors.
Not out of courage.
Because Claire offered nothing.
That mattered.
For once, he had to choose without a financial rescue.
He chose himself.
He gave investigators access to his old messages.
One thread with Margaret included:
MARGARET: Claire cannot know the financing is tied to her shares yet.
LUKE: Daniel says she’ll never agree.
MARGARET: That’s why Daniel has to get her signature another way.
Strong.
Margaret’s attorney claimed “signature” referred to a future negotiation.
Weak but possible.
Then another message:
LUKE: What if she files for divorce?
MARGARET: Then the postnup solves that.
There it was.
The postnup predated any alleged authorization.
Fraud looked increasingly provable.
Daniel shifted strategy again.
He offered prosecutors cooperation against Margaret in exchange for reduced exposure.
Claire learned through Maya.
She felt no surprise.
Daniel had finally realized his mother would sacrifice him too.
But cooperation came with a condition.
Daniel wanted Claire to state publicly that the fall was accidental.
Maya laughed when she heard.
“He wants to bargain with your truth.”
Claire refused.
Daniel withdrew his cooperation offer.
Smart enough to test leverage.
Cowardly enough to keep lying.
Then a new witness appeared.
The family’s longtime housekeeper, Rosa Bennett—not related despite the surname coincidence—had been in the kitchen during the incident.
She told police she saw Margaret hand Daniel Claire’s phone after the fall.
That contradicted both Margaret and Ashley.
More importantly, Rosa had cleaned the upstairs hallway earlier that day.
The camera worked.
She watched herself on the live monitor.
The “broken for weeks” story was false.
Margaret responded immediately.
She accused Rosa of stealing jewelry.
Receipts showed several missing items.
Rosa denied it.
Police found one necklace in her apartment.
Rosa became a compromised witness overnight.
Claire saw Margaret’s pattern.
She did not merely prepare lies.
She prepared weaknesses in other people.
Then Rosa’s attorney found a security video from her apartment building.
The necklace had been left in a package outside her door the morning after the fall.
A courier delivered it.
The courier account was paid by a corporate card.
The card belonged to Bennett Family Holdings.
Margaret’s company.
For the first time, investigators had evidence of an apparent frame job tied directly to the family.
