Chapter 7 - THE PERFECT SCAPEGOAT
Daniel denied sending the necklace.
He said Margaret used his company card regularly.
Margaret denied that.
Ashley claimed both were lying.
The family began cracking.
Claire watched from a distance.
That was important.
If she pushed too hard, they united against her.
If she waited, self-preservation did the work.
Prosecutors offered Ashley a limited immunity agreement for truthful cooperation.
She accepted.
Ashley admitted deleting the hallway footage.
But she claimed Daniel ordered her to.
“He said Claire would ruin him.”
Daniel called her a liar.
Ashley produced messages.
DANIEL: Get rid of the upstairs video.
ASHLEY: Mom said wait.
DANIEL: Do it now.
The timestamps were six minutes after the fall.
Daniel’s attorney attacked authenticity.
Forensic analysis confirmed they were genuine.
Daniel changed his story.
He admitted asking Ashley to delete footage.
Why?
Panic.
He believed the video would make an accidental shove look intentional.
Claire stared at the statement.
“Accidental shove?”
Daniel now claimed Claire stepped toward him during the argument.
He raised his hands to stop her.
She lost balance.
His first direct admission that he touched her.
Evidence had forced evolution again.
Maya almost smiled.
“He’s running out of places to move.”
But Margaret still had room.
She separated herself from Daniel publicly.
Her attorney issued a statement:
If Daniel acted improperly, Margaret Bennett neither authorized nor condoned it.
A mother abandoning her son in legal language.
Daniel understood.
He reopened cooperation talks.
This time without demanding Claire lie.
He offered prosecutors documents proving Margaret orchestrated the financial fraud.
In exchange, he wanted consideration on the deletion and attempted financing.
Nothing about the shove.
That remained separate.
Claire did not control the deal.
She hated that but accepted it.
Daniel turned over a private folder from Margaret’s study.
Inside were contingency plans.
If Claire stayed married: secure financing through Daniel.
If Claire filed divorce: enforce postnup.
If Claire challenged family spending: shift assets through trust.
If Claire removed Daniel from company access: initiate governance concern through shareholders.
Every scenario anticipated her.
Then Maya found one page with a handwritten note:
LAKE HOUSE - PRESSURE POINT / WITNESSES PRESENT / NO PRIVATE CONFRONTATION
Claire stared.
Margaret had specifically planned the weekend as a controlled confrontation.
Not the fall.
The confrontation.
She wanted witnesses to Daniel and Claire arguing.
Likely to support a later divorce narrative.
But Daniel had escalated beyond the plan.
That may be why Margaret said, “Not here. Not like this.”
Margaret was not shocked by the conflict.
She was shocked Daniel used physical force.
That distinction mattered.
It made her financially conspiratorial but not necessarily complicit in the shove.
Daniel became more isolated.
Then Claire received an anonymous email.
Attached was a video.
Not from the hallway camera.
From a guest’s phone.
Someone downstairs had been filming the dinner table for social media.
In the far background, visible through the open space above, Daniel and Claire stood near the railing.
The image was small.
Blurry.
But clear enough to show Daniel extend both arms.
And Claire go over immediately afterward.
The video could prove the push.
Claire called Maya.
Before she sent the file, another email arrived.
