Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO SAW TOO MUCH
Luke Bennett was forty-one and had spent his life staying out of family conflict.
That made him useful.
People assumed silence meant neutrality.
Claire no longer did.
Maya subpoenaed location data from Luke’s phone.
At the exact time of the fall, it connected to the lake house Wi-Fi.
Luke claimed his phone remained inside while he walked outside.
Possible.
Then a home automation sensor showed the upstairs guest-room door opening twenty seconds before the fall.
The guest room assigned to Luke.
Still not proof he was inside.
Claire asked him to meet voluntarily.
He refused.
Margaret’s influence was obvious.
Daniel then made his first offensive move against Claire personally.
He filed a counterclaim in the divorce alleging financial abuse.
He described years of humiliation around money.
Claire controlling accounts.
Claire rejecting business investments.
Claire requiring receipts.
Some examples were real.
He turned boundaries into domination.
He also produced audio clips of arguments.
Claire shouting.
Claire saying, “You would have nothing without me.”
She remembered saying it after discovering Daniel secretly used joint funds for his brother’s business.
Ugly.
True.
Out of context, damaging.
Maya warned that family court did not decide criminal guilt, but perception mattered everywhere.
Claire refused to soften the truth.
“Yes, I said it.”
“Good,” Maya said. “Never lie about what they can prove.”
Daniel expected denial.
Claire gave him none.
That weakened his leverage.
Then the prosecutor re-interviewed Ashley.
She admitted holding Claire’s phone after the fall.
Daniel had told her to grab it because paramedics might need medical information.
Reasonable.
She claimed she handed it to Margaret.
Margaret claimed she gave it directly to a paramedic.
The paramedic denied receiving it.
Someone lied.
Ashley’s credibility cracked.
Maya pushed harder.
Phone extraction revealed Ashley had searched:

Three days before the fall.
Ashley said Daniel asked her because they were deleting old footage to free cloud storage.
Daniel denied asking.
Their stories diverged.
Margaret intervened.
She claimed she had instructed Ashley.
Why?
Because cameras occasionally captured guests changing clothes through open doors.
Plausible privacy concern.
Again, Margaret absorbed risk before it reached Daniel.
Claire began to suspect Margaret was the strategist.
Daniel was the weapon.
But then Luke finally called.
He demanded a meeting with no lawyers.
Claire agreed only if Maya waited nearby.
Luke looked exhausted.
“I saw Daniel push you.”
Claire’s pulse jumped.
“Will you testify?”
Luke looked away.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because it wasn’t the first thing I saw.”
Claire waited.
Luke said Daniel and Margaret had been arguing in the upstairs study ten minutes earlier.
About Claire.
Margaret wanted Daniel to confront Claire about the loan.
Daniel wanted to leave the weekend early.
Margaret said:
“If she walks away now, we lose everything.”
Then Daniel said something Luke could not forget.
“I can’t keep doing what you ask.”
Claire stared.
“What had she asked him to do?”
Luke shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Then he added:
“But Mom answered, ‘You already started. There is no clean way back.’”
