Chapter 11 - LILY'S DOLL
Lily’s doll contained the final important clue.
Not because someone hid a microchip in it.
Because Lily recorded voices.
The doll was an inexpensive interactive toy with a “say it back” button.
Children could record a few seconds and replay them.
Lily had accidentally recorded part of the argument while hiding in the upstairs hallway.
The audio was poor.
But understandable.
CLARA:
Move.
DEREK:
Just listen—
CLARA:
Get out of my way.
TERESA:
Clara, stop this.
CLARA:
Give me my phone.
Then Lily’s breathing.
Then:
CLARA:
I’m calling Alex.
TERESA:
Not like this.
DEREK:
You’re going to destroy everything.
Clara:
You did that.
End.
No confession to murder.
No sound of assault.
But it corroborated:
phone taken,
doorway blocked,
fraud confrontation,
Clara wanting to leave.
Lily had carried the truth through the funeral without understanding it.
Alex cried when Detective Cole played the recording.
Then asked that Lily never hear it again.
