Chapter 9 - THE MISSING PHONE RETURNS
Clara’s phone appeared six days after the funeral.
Inside Derek’s car.
Police found it during a warrant search connected to the forged guarantee investigation.
Derek said:
“I didn’t know it was there.”
No one believed him.
Forensics showed the phone had been powered off at 8:22 p.m. the night Clara died.
After paramedics arrived.
Someone entered the passcode incorrectly twice.
Then powered it down.
Fingerprint evidence was not useful.
The device had been handled by many people.
But location history showed it traveled with Derek’s car after he left the house.
That was strong.
Derek changed his story.
Teresa had handed him the phone after Clara was taken away.
Why?
“To keep Lily from seeing the messages.”
Alex stared.
“What messages?”
Derek looked at Teresa.
Then police recovered deleted notifications.
Clara to Alex:
CALL ME. DEREK FORGED YOUR NAME.
Another:
YOUR MOTHER KNOWS.
Then:
IF THEY KEEP ME HERE I’M CALLING POLICE.
There.
“Keep me here.”
Not:
they attacked me.
Not:
they’re killing me.
But enough to show Clara felt prevented from leaving.
Derek had turned the phone off because he feared those messages would trigger an immediate fraud investigation.
He did not cause the cardiac arrest by powering down the phone after paramedics arrived.

That was a separate crime-risk problem.
