Chapter 5 - THE FIRST WARNING

Vanessa admitted it.

She had threatened to expose Ethan two weeks before the wedding.

“He kept moving the date.”

“What date?”

“The date he was leaving you.”

Claire felt something cold settle inside her.

“He told you he was going to marry me, then leave?”

“After the integration settled.”

“How romantic.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“He said the companies needed stability.”

There it was again.

Business as permission for betrayal.

Then Vanessa showed Claire messages.

Ethan:

Wedding changes nothing long term.

Another:

Once the acquisition is stable, we handle Claire.

Another:

Do not force this before close.

Vanessa had interpreted “handle Claire” as divorce.

Maybe.

Claire interpreted it differently now.

Then Rachel found a post-closing draft agreement involving Reed Strategies.

Termination after six months.

Maximum payout:

$400,000.

Vanessa had expected $2.4 million.

Claire sent her the document.

Vanessa called within minutes.

“He was going to cut me out.”

“Yes.”

“He told me the contract was guaranteed.”

“He lied.”

Vanessa laughed once, then started crying.

Claire felt no sympathy.

Not yet.

Then Vanessa offered cooperation.

In exchange:

Protection from civil claims.

A negotiated vendor settlement.

And no public accusation that she engineered the entire wedding scandal.

Claire refused.

“You helped him cheat. You sent the anonymous message because you wanted me humiliated enough to disappear. You don’t get a clean exit because he lied to you too.”

Vanessa went quiet.

“What do I get?”

“If you tell the truth under oath, I won’t distort it.”

“That’s it?”

“That’s more than either of you gave me.”

Then Vanessa said something useful.

“There was an earlier warning.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

“I messaged you four months ago.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa claimed she had sent Claire a photo of Ethan leaving her apartment.

The message showed as delivered.

Claire never saw it.

Rachel checked Claire’s phone backup.

There was evidence of a deleted message thread.

Deletion timestamp:

4:11 a.m.

Device login:

Bennett Harbor executive office.

Claire stared.

May you like

Someone on her own side had erased the warning.

The affair was no longer only Ethan’s secret.
