Chapter 8 - THE UNCLE IN THE HALLWAY
Robert Bennett had visited Ethan’s room at 5:33 a.m.
Eighteen minutes before Vanessa left.
Forty-nine minutes before Claire received the anonymous message.
He had never mentioned it.
Claire confronted him in the board library.
“Why were you there?”
Robert closed the door.
“Ethan called me.”
“Why?”
“He panicked.”
“About Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
Claire stared.
“You knew before I did.”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell me?”
“No.”
“Did you export the video?”
Robert looked away.
That was answer enough.
Claire’s anger became strangely quiet.
“You sent it.”
“I sent you evidence.”
“You deleted her warning four months earlier too?”
“No.”
“Then why wait until the wedding morning?”
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“Because four months ago the Cole acquisition was fragile. If the relationship scandal exploded then, we could have lost a strategic deal before diligence was complete.”
Claire stared at him.
“And by the wedding morning?”
“Diligence was substantially finished.”
“So then I was allowed to know.”
He flinched.
Claire had thought Ethan’s betrayal was the ugliest part.
Now she saw another kind.
Robert believed information belonged to whoever knew how to time it.
He admitted exporting Vanessa’s video because Ethan had shown it to him while begging for help.
“I thought you deserved proof.”
“After deciding when I deserved it.”
“Yes.”
Then Robert denied deleting the earlier message.
Could be true.
He had not been in the executive office on the deletion night according to travel records.
That left Daniel Price or someone using his credentials.
Claire removed Robert from all acquisition decisions too.
The board protested.
Robert had decades of experience.
Claire did not care.
Conflict was conflict.
Then the independent valuation arrived.
Cole Hospitality was worth far less than the signed purchase price.
Not worthless.
Not failing.
But lower by roughly $48 million.
The accounting adjustments and undisclosed vendor commitments explained most of the gap.
Ethan’s $11.8 million retention package also looked excessive.
Now the deal could be renegotiated on financial grounds.
Not because Claire was cheated on.
Then Ethan sent one final proposal.
He would resign after two years, reduce his retention package, and let Reed Strategies terminate immediately.
In exchange, Claire had to sign a non-disparagement agreement about the wedding and affair.
