Chapter 9 - THE BRIDE WHO DIDN'T CANCEL THE DEAL
Claire did not cancel the acquisition.
That shocked the press.
It shocked Vanessa.
It shocked Ethan most.
Bennett Harbor announced:
Negotiations with Cole Hospitality continue under revised independent valuation and governance terms.
No founder-alignment package.
No spousal assumptions.
No automatic operating authority for Ethan.
No Reed Strategies contract.
The business could survive without the marriage.
That destroyed Ethan’s favorite defense.
He had spent days saying Claire was sabotaging shareholders because he cheated.
Now she was buying his company anyway.
Just not at his inflated price.
Ethan called.
“You’re humiliating me.”
Claire laughed softly.
“You survived the altar.”
“This is different.”
“Yes. This has numbers.”
Then he tried charm.
The old voice.
The one that had once made Claire believe he understood her better than anyone.
“We can still fix us.”
“No.”
“You don’t mean that.”
“I walked away in front of three hundred people.”
“You came to the altar.”
“To press play.”
Silence.
Then Ethan became cold.
“If Cole sells under these terms, I lose everything I built.”
“No. You lose the premium you attached to yourself.”
He hung up.
Then Vanessa arrived at Claire’s office without an appointment.
Security nearly removed her.
Claire allowed five minutes.
Vanessa wore no silver dress.
No smug smile.
“I signed the affidavit.”
“I know.”
“I also turned over Ethan’s messages.”
“I know.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“What happens to me?”
“Your company gets paid for verified work. Inflated invoices get adjusted. Anything else is for counsel.”
Vanessa stared.
“That’s it?”
Claire nodded.
“You expected revenge?”
“Yes.”
“So did I.”
That answer seemed to unsettle Vanessa more than hatred.
Then she said:
“I really did love him.”
Claire looked at her.
“That doesn’t improve anything.”
“I know.”
Vanessa stood to leave.
At the door she turned.
“Your uncle wasn’t the only Bennett person Ethan called that morning.”
Claire frowned.
“Who else?”
“Daniel Price.”
The finance chief.
The man whose credentials were linked to the deleted warning.
Vanessa continued:
“Ethan told him, ‘If Claire sees anything before Monday, the valuation is dead.’”
Claire’s skin went cold.
