Chapter 12 - CALEB GETS SCARED FOR A DIFFERENT REASON
Caleb’s fear changed when subpoenas arrived.
Not because Ethan threatened him.
Because documents did.
His consulting company had received money without clean records.
His messages encouraged Claire to:
move funds before disclosure,
describe Ethan using legal-sounding terms,
and keep certain conversations off shared devices.
None of that automatically made him a criminal.
It did make him look manipulative.
Caleb retained counsel.
Then ended the relationship with Claire.
She was stunned.
“You said you loved me.”
“I do.”
“Then why are you leaving?”
“Because this is becoming a legal disaster.”
Claire stared.
There it was.
Caleb loved the fantasy of rescuing her from Ethan.
He loved being chosen.
He did not love consequences equally.
The affair had been built partly on contrast.
The campsite itself became evidence in an unexpected way.
A trail camera maintained by the campground captured the group arriving and parking.
Not the tent interior.
Not the affair.
But timestamps showed Caleb entered Ethan and Claire’s tent twenty-two minutes before Ethan returned from a supply run.
Claire had told Ethan later:
“He came in for his jacket.”
The footage showed Caleb carrying the jacket when he entered.
Small contradiction.
Claire corrected her statement after seeing it.
“He came in to talk.”
That mattered less legally than emotionally.
Every revised explanation forced Ethan to ask what else depended on convenience.
Caleb had his own reason for pushing the exit plan.
His divorce had been chaotic.
He lost access to a shared account for several days after his ex-wife moved money under legal advice.
Nothing illegal.
Still terrifying.
He became obsessed with being the person who moved first.
To him, preparation meant power.
When Claire described uncertainty, he answered with tactics.
When she described sadness, he answered with strategy.
That felt useful.
Especially beside Ethan’s tendency to delay conflict.
But strategy can become emotional avoidance too.
Caleb never seriously asked:
Do you still want the marriage?
He asked:
How do you leave cleanly?
Different question.
Different outcome.
Caleb:
bold.
Ethan:
passive.
