Chapter 4 - USELESS MAN

Claire called Ethan useless because she believed he had become emotionally absent.

That was not entirely false.

Ethan worked in risk management for a regional utility company.

He spent his days anticipating:

failures,

liability,

weather events,

equipment risks.

At home, he avoided conflict.

Claire would say:

“We need to decide.”

Ethan:

“Let’s not do this tonight.”

She would say:

“You never fight for anything.”

He heard:

I want drama.

She meant:

I want engagement.

Over time, Claire stopped asking.

Then started mocking.

“You’d make a spreadsheet before choosing dinner.”

“You need a risk assessment to buy socks.”

At first Ethan laughed.

Then did less.

Retreated more.

Claire interpreted retreat as weakness.

That did not justify the affair.

It did explain why “useless” was not invented in the tent.

It was the ugliest version of a complaint she had been making for months.

Ethan would later have to decide whether he wanted to understand that complaint after the marriage was already over.
