Chapter 6 - THE FIRE EDMUND ALLOWED

The old fire report was damaged, but the timeline was readable.
Flynn-Constance Research had been testing a heat-resistant control assembly.
The suppression system kept interrupting high-temperature trials.
Edmund authorized a temporary bypass in the main test bay.
Archie had argued against it.
Clara Flynn logged the disagreement.
Then a transformer failed during an overnight run.
Fire spread faster than expected.
The suppression system did not engage automatically.
Clara died.
Archie survived.
Lissa read her father’s authorization until the letters blurred.
“He caused it.”
Archie’s voice was flat.
“He made the risk acceptable.”
That was not exactly the same.
It was bad enough.
Then another maintenance entry appeared.
At 6:10 p.m., hours before ignition, a junior intern re-enabled the suppression system manually.
Initials:
O.D.
Oliver.
Lissa looked at him.
“You tried to turn it back on.”
Oliver nodded.
“I thought the test was reckless.”
“What happened?”
“Edmund caught me.”
“And?”
“He ordered it disabled again.”
Archie stared.
“You never told me that.”
“I told the investigator.”
No such statement appeared in the final report.
Oliver said:
“Edmund’s attorney told me an intern’s contradiction would look like blame-shifting. They said the company would collapse before insurance paid.”
“So you stayed quiet,” Lissa said.
“Yes.”
“Then helped falsify Archie’s settlement.”
Oliver’s voice sharpened.
“I helped stabilize a disaster.”
He truly believed it.
That frightened Lissa more than denial.
Then the committee found Edmund’s personal accounting ledger.
Payments to Archie’s medical care.
Payments to Clara’s parents.
Education fund for Archie’s daughter.
And one private entry:
Debt to Archie remains moral even where legal file says otherwise.
Lissa cried when she read it.
It did not absolve Edmund.
It proved he knew.
“I don’t need his guilt,” Archie said.
“I do,” Lissa answered.
That night she returned home and opened a box of her father’s old audio recorders.
Most contained speeches and product notes.
One tape was labeled:
A.F. / IF EVER FOUND.
Her hands shook.
She pressed play.
Edmund’s voice filled the room.
“I did wrong by Archie.”
Then static.
The tape cut out.

Only six words survived.
But Oliver had spent twenty-two years making sure even those six were never heard.
