Chapter 9 - THE MAN OLIVER PROTECTED
The contractor was named Peter Shaw.
Metro Facility Group supervisor.
Brother-in-law to Oliver’s sister.
Peter did not deny disabling the panel.
He claimed the repeated warnings were false positives during renovation.
“Who told you that?”
“My office.”
“Who in your office?”
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Mr. Dermit’s deputy.”
Grant again.
Oliver seemed increasingly insulated from direct action and increasingly surrounded by people who claimed to act for what they thought he wanted.
Lissa finally saw the system.
Oliver did not need to issue every dirty instruction.
He created a culture where everyone knew continuity mattered more than disclosure.
Then Peter produced his own emails.
He had warned operations:
Temporary bypass not safe beyond 48 hours. Need full shutdown and inspection.
Grant replied:
Keep residents in place. Full shutdown not approved.
Cc:
Oliver Dermit.
Oliver had received it.
No response.
“Why didn’t you stop it?” Lissa asked.
He answered:
“Because the modernization budget was already overrun and relocation would cost three million dollars.”
Archie stared at him.
“Five kids were sleeping in that building.”
“Two hundred families were living across the campus. A full shutdown could have displaced all of them.”
Again.
Visible crisis versus hidden risk.
Oliver always chose the risk that stayed quiet.
Then the board received a shocking document from Oliver’s counsel.
A legal indemnity agreement signed years earlier by Edmund Constance.
It protected Oliver for “good-faith actions taken to preserve enterprise continuity during founder incapacity.”
Oliver had not invented his philosophy alone.
Edmund had rewarded it.
Lissa felt sick.
Archie read the document.
Then surprised everyone.
“That changes nothing.”
Oliver looked at him.
“It changes whether I acted alone.”
“I never said you did.”
Archie turned to Lissa.
“Your father taught him the disease. Oliver perfected it.”
That sentence stayed with her.
Then the special committee reached a preliminary ownership conclusion.
Archie was almost certainly co-inventor of the original thermal-resilience platform.
But modern enterprise value could not be assigned backward to him.
A settlement range was prepared.
Large.
Meaningful.
Not destructive.
Archie accepted the principle immediately.
Oliver did not.
Why would Oliver care if Archie got money?
Because recognition would trigger something else.
The company charter gave original founders special historical disclosure rights.
If Archie became legally recognized as a founder, he could demand the full archive.
