Chapter 7 - THE SERVER IN THE SCRAP BIN

Archie knew why Edmund’s tape ended abruptly.

“The rest may still exist.”

“How?”

“The disaster-recovery server.”

Flynn-Constance kept an off-site mirrored system in the years before cloud storage. After the company moved headquarters, old recovery hardware was boxed, auctioned, and eventually marked for disposal.

Archie had recognized one server months earlier in a Constance scrap cage.

He took it.

That explained one of the missing asset logs.

Oliver almost smiled when Lissa told him.

“So he did steal company property.”

Archie answered:

“I stole back a machine built from my company.”

The legal committee was less poetic.

They documented chain of custody and allowed a neutral forensic lab to inspect it.

Most drives were corrupted.

One archival partition survived.

Inside:

patent drafts,

Clara’s accounting logs,

Edmund’s memos,

and audio backups.

The full recording appeared.

Edmund’s voice:

“I did wrong by Archie. I chose survival first and told myself I would fix ownership later.”

Then:

“If Lissa ever inherits this company, do not teach her that survival excuses theft.”

No one moved.

Archie looked away.

Lissa felt as if her father had reached through death to remove the last excuse anyone could offer him.

Then came another file.

A draft restoration agreement.

Proposed:

Archie recognized as co-inventor.

Back royalties.

Founder attribution.

No governance rights unless separately negotiated.

Signed:

Edmund Constance.

Unsigned by Archie.

Routing note:

Deliver through Oliver D.

Lissa turned slowly.

Oliver looked tired now.

Not afraid.

Tired.

“You intercepted it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Edmund was days from surgery. The board was unstable. Investors were already asking whether he could continue.”

“You decided for him.”

“I decided for the company.”

Archie leaned forward.

“You always decide for the company.”

Oliver’s eyes flashed.

“Someone had to.”

Then Lissa’s general counsel entered with a fresh security report.

The recent prototype leak—the investigation that started everything—had finally been traced.

The files had not left through janitorial access.

They were copied through an executive operations account.

Oliver Dermit’s account.

He stared at the report.

Then said quietly:

“That wasn’t me.”

For once, Lissa believed he might be telling the truth.

May you like

Which meant someone else had been using Oliver’s credentials.

And wanted Lissa to follow Archie.
