Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO LEFT AFTER MIDNIGHT

Lissa Constance noticed patterns because patterns had kept her company alive.
The missing files were not dramatic.
A copied prototype memo.
A discarded drive that vanished from inventory.
A maintenance corridor opened at 1:14 a.m. three nights in one month.
Oliver Dermit placed the security summary on her desk.
“Archibald Flynn.”
“The janitor?”
“Fifty-eight. Night shift. No family listed. Leaves with company scrap regularly.”
Lissa studied photographs of Archie leaving after midnight with broken laptops and sealed electronics bins.
“Why hasn’t security stopped him?”
“Because he has disposal authorization.”
“So he may simply be doing his job.”
Oliver smiled faintly.
“He also has physical access and unexplained movement.”
That was why Lissa kept Oliver close.
He rarely overstated a case.
He arranged facts until someone else did it for him.
“Don’t confront him,” she said.
Oliver frowned.
“I want to see where he goes.”
That night Lissa followed Archie’s van across the industrial district.
He stopped at an abandoned warehouse scheduled for demolition.
Lissa waited ten minutes, then entered through a side door.
Archie stood beside a steel workbench, opening the back of a company laptop.
Lissa stepped from the shadows.
“Caught you.”
Archie spun around.
His face changed from surprise to something bitter.
“How much are they paying you for our secrets?” Lissa asked.
He stared at her.
“You really came here hoping I was a thief?”
Before she could answer, a small voice came from behind him.
“Uncle Archie?”
An eight-year-old girl with tangled curls stepped into the light.
Lissa froze.
Then she saw the cots.
Five children sleeping beneath donated blankets.
Medicine.
Schoolbooks.
Repaired laptops.
A space heater humming beside a wall of patched insulation.
The girl hugged Archie.
“Did you fix my computer?”
“Almost, sweetheart.”
Lissa looked around, devastated.
“Oh my God…”
Archie’s expression stayed guarded.
“This is what you followed me to expose.”
Then headlights blasted through the warehouse windows.
A company security van stopped outside.
Oliver’s voice thundered through the door.
“Flynn! Open the door!”
Lissa spun toward Archie.
“I didn’t send them.”
Archie’s face hardened.
“No. He did.”
He rushed to a steel cabinet, pulled out a scorched fireproof folder, and shoved it into her hands.
“What is this?”
She opened it.
A photograph slid free.
Young Archie stood beside a man Lissa recognized instantly.
Her father.
Edmund Constance.
Her hands began shaking.
“You knew my father?”
Archie looked at her.
“He stole everything from me.”
Then the warehouse door burst open.
Oliver stormed in.
He saw the folder.
His face turned white.
“No.”
Lissa looked down at her father’s signature.
“What did my father do?”
Oliver lunged.
“Give me that!”
May you like
Archie stepped between them.
And for the first time in twelve years of working beside Oliver, Lissa saw fear defeat calculation.
