Chapter 1 - THE BLACK FOLDER

Naomi Keller did not ask Claire if she was okay.

Claire liked her immediately for that.

The private office had no family photographs, no motivational art, no gold-plated nonsense.

Just black shelves, dark glass, and one large window overlooking Chicago.

Naomi sat across from her in an elegant black suit.

Her eyes went first to Claire’s split lip.

Then the purple bruise under her cheekbone.

“Tell me what they did.”

Claire looked down.

Her hands were still shaking.

“My family destroyed me.”

Naomi waited.

So Claire told her.

The Waverly Crown Foundation gala.

Three hundred guests.

Her father in a black tuxedo.

Her mother in gold.

Austin smiling like he had already won.

Claire confronting him near the private corridor.

“You moved foundation money into your own company.”

Austin had laughed.

“It’s called consulting.”

“You hid ownership.”

“It was disclosed where it mattered.”

“To Dad?”

“Exactly.”

Then Preston appeared.

“What are you doing?”

Claire held up the folder.

“Stopping him.”

Preston slapped her.

Hard.

She fell against the wall.

“Dad!”

He grabbed her hair.

Dragged her.

Claire remembered reaching for the carpet with both hands.

“Stop!”

Meredith watched.

Laughing.

Not loudly.

That was worse.

Austin clapped once.

Then twice.

“You deserved it.”

Claire reached toward her mother.

“Mom, please.”

Meredith turned away.

“You embarrass this family.”

Back in Naomi’s office, Claire stopped speaking.

Silence.

Naomi opened a drawer.

Removed a black folder.

Slid it across the desk.

“You don’t want forgiveness.”

Claire looked up.

“No.”

“You want revenge.”

Claire wiped her face.

“Yes.”

Naomi leaned forward.

“Are you ready to destroy your family?”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“I’m ready.”

Naomi nodded.

Then said:

“Good. First rule.”

Claire waited.

“We don’t destroy people with lies.”

Claire frowned.

Naomi continued:

“No hacked phones. No planted drugs. No threats. No fake evidence. We find what they already did, then remove every place they can hide.”

Claire stared at the black folder.

“What’s inside?”

Naomi opened it.

Four tabs.

VIOLENCE.

MONEY.

TRUST.

WITNESSES.

“Your revenge,” Naomi said, “starts with proving what they were already afraid you knew.”

Then her assistant entered.

“Ms. Keller, the Waverly family filed.”

Naomi looked at Claire.

“Filed what?”

The assistant placed a petition on the desk.

TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF BENEFICIARY VOTING RIGHTS.

Claire went cold.

Her family had begun the war before she even found Naomi.
