Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF PEACE

The first settlement offer came in a white envelope.
Eight million dollars.
A townhouse.
Lifetime medical coverage.
Annual income of three hundred thousand dollars.
In exchange:
Claire would sign the stewardship agreement.
Withdraw all allegations.
Agree the gala incident was “mutual family conflict.”
Waive claims against Preston.
Resign from the foundation board.
Remain silent publicly.
Claire read the number twice.
Eight million.
Enough to leave.
Enough to never speak to them again.
Naomi asked:
“Do you want it?”
Claire stared.
“You’re supposed to tell me not to.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because revenge is expensive.”
Claire looked up.
Naomi continued:
“Peace may be worth more to you than winning.”
Claire hated how reasonable she sounded.
Then Naomi said:
“If you take it, I make sure the terms are clean.”
“And if I don’t?”
“We keep digging.”
Claire closed the file.
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t want their money to become the price of pretending they didn’t do it.”
Naomi nodded once.
Then said:
“Good. Now we make that decision costly.”
The next break came from Rachel Waverly.
Austin’s wife.
She requested a confidential meeting.
Claire expected loyalty to Austin.
Instead Rachel arrived carrying a phone.
“I think he’s moving money away from me.”
Claire almost laughed.
Of course that was why she came.
Naomi did not judge.
Self-interest made witnesses reliable in its own way.
Rachel had found a draft operating agreement for a new company.
Austin owned ninety percent.
A family adviser owned ten.
Rachel had no marital claim if the structure was treated as separate future compensation.
Austin had been preparing to cut her out.
That made her willing to talk.
She knew about Eastbridge.
She believed it was disclosed.
Then she played a voice message from Preston.
“Claire has to look dangerous before the trustees see her as credible.”
Claire went still.
Another message.
Meredith:
“Then she signs, or she loses the shares.”
No ambiguity.
No intervention language.
No concern.
Strategy.
Then Austin’s voice:
“And if she goes public?”
Preston:
“People believe the family that looks calm.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Naomi did not smile.
She simply said:
“Now we have motive.”
Then Rachel added:
“There’s one more recording.”
She played it.
Austin:
“What if she gets hurt?”
Preston answered:
“Then she should have learned when to stop.”
May you like
Claire’s hands began shaking again.
This time from rage.
