The $480,000 did not go directly to Preston.
It went from Eastbridge to a consulting entity.
Then to a family partnership.
Then into an account used to pay Preston’s personal line of credit.
Austin said it was a legitimate distribution.
Preston said it repaid an old loan.
Naomi asked for the loan agreement.
None.
Then a ledger appeared.
Preston had funded Austin’s first business ten years earlier.
Maybe the payment was repayment.
No formal schedule.
No interest record.
Messy family money.
Then Meredith attacked Claire with something new.
She disclosed that Claire once received a $600,000 “special distribution” from Waverly Crown during her divorce.
Claire stared.
“That was mine.”
The distribution was documented.
Legal.
But Meredith framed it as favoritism.
“Everyone in this family has benefited from informal arrangements.”
That was true.
Claire had accepted money without demanding perfect governance because it benefited her.
Naomi told her:
“You own that too.”
So Claire did.
At the next hearing:
“Yes. I accepted a distribution that should have gone through clearer approval.”
Preston’s lawyer smiled.
Then Claire continued:
“That is why I am asking for an audit that includes me.”
The smile disappeared.
Claire authorized review of her own transactions.
That was the difference.
Then the forensic team found something unexpected.
Claire’s $600,000 distribution had been approved properly after all.
Independent committee minutes existed.
Meredith knew.
She had omitted them.
Selective truth again.
Then Rachel delivered another recording.
Austin and Meredith.
Austin:
“If Claire gets the audit, Mom’s foundation accounts are next.”
Meredith:
“Then she never gets the audit.”
Claire froze.
Not Austin’s accounts.
Meredith’s.
Naomi looked at her.
“We’ve been treating your mother like a facilitator.”
Claire swallowed.
“What if she has her own scheme?”
Foundation records showed Meredith controlled donor-advised funds worth nearly $40 million.
Claire’s audit could reach them.
