Chapter 2 - THE STORY THEY PREPARED

The petition was polished.
That frightened Claire more than rage would have.
Preston described the party as a family intervention.
Meredith described Claire as emotionally deteriorating.
Austin said Claire had become obsessed with accusing him of theft.
Then came exhibits.
Medical notes.
Texts.
Photographs.
Claire stared.
One text from her to Preston:
I swear I will burn this family name to the ground if you keep protecting him.
Real.
Another to Austin:
You deserve to lose everything.
Real.
A photograph of shattered glass in Preston’s study.
Claire had thrown it against the wall six months earlier.
Real.
Naomi said:
“They built a truthful lie.”
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
“Enough facts are real that the false conclusion breathes.”
Then the medical notes.
Claire had panic attacks after her divorce three years earlier.
She took sleep medication briefly.
She had seen a therapist.
None of that made her incompetent.
But arranged together, it created a picture.
Naomi asked:
“Who had access?”
“My mother.”
“Why?”
“She handled family insurance.”
Of course.
Then one paragraph in the petition:
Due to recent violent behavior and escalating fixation on corporate matters, Claire Waverly should not receive enhanced voting authority until independent capacity review.
The grandmother’s shares transferred in nine days.
If the petition succeeded, Austin gained time.
Then Naomi found a draft attached accidentally to metadata.
Created four days before the gala.
The assault had not happened yet.
The petition already existed.
Claire stared.
“They knew.”
Naomi nodded.
“Now we prove why.”
Then Naomi’s investigator obtained the gala camera map.
Two hallway cameras had been redirected twenty minutes before Claire confronted Austin.
Authorization:
Preston Waverly.
His lawyer said he wanted privacy around donor conversations.
Possible.
Then catering audio surfaced.
A server’s body microphone had captured part of a nearby conversation.
Meredith:
“Make sure she reacts before the trustees arrive.”
Austin:
“What if she walks away?”
Meredith:
“Then Preston handles it.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Naomi replayed it.
The words were clear.
Not enough to prove assault planning.
Enough to prove reaction planning.
Then Naomi asked:
“What were you carrying when you confronted Austin?”
Claire remembered.
A folder.
Financial printouts.
Naomi smiled faintly.
“Where is it now?”
Claire froze.
Gone.
Preston had dragged her across the corridor.
The folder disappeared during the chaos.
Inside were the first documents showing Austin’s hidden company.

Someone had not only wanted Claire angry.
They wanted the evidence out of her hands.
