Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO CALLED IT RESTRAINT
Preston’s deposition lasted five hours.
He admitted slapping Claire.
He called it defensive restraint.
Naomi asked:
“How is a slap restraint?”
“She was hysterical.”
“Did she strike you first?”
“No.”
“Did she strike Austin?”
“No.”
“Did she have a weapon?”
“No.”
“Then why did you grab her hair?”
Preston’s lawyer objected.
He answered anyway.
“She was trying to leave with confidential documents.”
There.
The missing folder.
Naomi leaned forward.
“So the physical confrontation involved documents.”
Preston realized the mistake.
He corrected.
“She was emotionally unstable.”
Naomi did not let him escape.
“What documents?”
“Foundation materials.”
“Belonging to whom?”
“The foundation.”
Claire’s copies had come from board packets she was entitled to access.
Then Naomi asked:
“Where are they now?”
Preston said he did not know.
Security staff did.
One guard testified that after the incident, Austin handed him a folder and said:
“Take this to Dad’s office.”
The folder never entered evidence.
No preservation.
No chain.
Then Austin’s counsel claimed the documents were duplicates.
Maybe.
But destroying or hiding them after an assault looked terrible.
Then Meredith testified.
She denied laughing.
A caterer said she did.
Meredith called the caterer confused.
Then video from a guest’s phone surfaced.
In the background:
Claire on the floor.
Preston holding her hair.
Meredith smiling.
Austin clapping.
It was only five seconds.
Enough.
Public reaction shifted.
Then the family changed strategy.
They stopped arguing the assault did not happen.
They argued it was a private family breakdown unrelated to the trust.
Smart.
Separate violence from money.
Then Naomi produced the voice message.
Claire has to look dangerous before the trustees see her as credible.
Preston stared at Rachel.
Rachel stared back.
Marriage ending in real time.
Then Preston said:
“That referred to Claire’s existing behavior.”
Naomi asked:
“Before or after you slapped her?”
Silence.
No good answer.
Then the independent trust examiner requested all communications about Claire’s capacity.
Meredith’s private notes came in.
Months of them.
One line:
If Claire learns Eastbridge ownership before transfer date, trigger wellness strategy immediately.
Claire read it.
“Trigger wellness strategy.”
