Chapter 6 - THE PARTY MARK WANTED TO SAVE
Mark’s company sponsored a summer fundraiser for a youth sports foundation.
Public event.
Donors.
Parents.
Children.
Jessica insisted Tyler attend.
Emily was working the event through the museum’s partnership program.
She objected privately.
Mark laughed.
“You don’t get to ban my son from public life.”
He was right.
Emily had no authority to ban him.
So she did something else.
She required all children in activity zones to follow the same posted safety rules.
No exceptions.
Tyler received a wristband like everyone else.
Rule violation:
warning.
Second:
parent pickup from activity area.
Jessica rolled her eyes.
“Cute.”
Then Tyler began.
First, he switched two name cards.
Harmless.
Warning.
Then he kicked over a display ball rack after a volunteer corrected him.
Second violation.
Emily asked Jessica to remove him from the activity zone.
Jessica refused.
“He didn’t mean it.”
Emily pointed to the rule board.
Same rules for everyone.
Mark intervened.
“You’re embarrassing us.”
Emily answered:
“No. Your son is.”
Then Tyler grabbed a bucket of water balloons from a supervised station and threw one at a donor.
It burst against the man’s suit.
Tyler laughed.
The donor did not.
Mark froze.
Because the donor was important.
Suddenly “kids mess around” sounded less useful.
Jessica rushed over.
“He’s excited.”
The donor stared at her.
“Then excite him somewhere else.”
Emily almost smiled.
Mark removed Tyler.
Not because Tyler hurt someone’s feelings.
Because the wrong adult saw it.
That told Emily everything.
Then the donor asked:
“Does he always behave like that?”
Mark said:
“No.”

Emily said nothing.
The cameras did.
