Chapter 9 - THE ANTIQUE CABINET

The insurance company denied the $24,000 cabinet claim.

Reason:

pre-existing damage and inconsistent incident descriptions.

Mark exploded.

At the adjuster.

At Jessica.

At Tyler.

That last part mattered.

For once, Tyler became useful less than he became expensive.

Mark shouted:

“You couldn’t just leave it alone?”

Tyler stared.

Then:

“You told me it was ugly.”

Silence.

Jessica went pale.

Mark said:

“What?”

Tyler continued:

“You said if it broke, insurance would buy a better one.”

Mark grabbed his shoulder.

“Shut up.”

Tyler looked frightened.

Not by consequences.

By betrayal.

His father had taught him the rule and then denied it.

The adjuster was still on speakerphone.

He heard everything.

That triggered a deeper review.

Not criminal charges automatically.

But enough to involve a special investigations unit.

Jessica later blamed Tyler.

Emily heard about it from Ava.

That made her furious.

They had spent years saying he was too young to be responsible.

Now, when his honesty endangered them, suddenly he was old enough to carry blame.

Emily called Jessica.

“Do not put this on him.”

Jessica snapped:

“You wanted consequences.”

“For behavior. Not for your insurance choices.”

Then Jessica whispered:

“Mark told him it was a joke.”

“Was it?”

May you like

Silence.

The family system was finally turning inward.
