Chapter 13 - THE DINNER TABLE WITHOUT BENNETTS

A year later, Claire hosted dinner.

Her house.

Her table.

Four friends.

Maya.

Her sister.

One neighbor.

She cooked steak.

By accident, one came out overdone.

Claire stared at it.

Everyone noticed her freeze.

Maya said gently:

“Throw it away.”

Claire laughed.

Then cried.

Not dramatic.

Quiet.

Her sister took the plate.

“No steak deserves this much power.”

They ordered pizza.

Claire laughed harder.

That became the story she preferred.

Not the stove.

Pizza afterward.

Then Claire started therapy focused on coercive control and trauma.

She disliked words like “survivor” at first.

They sounded like identity requirements.

Therapist said:

“You don’t have to become a symbol.”

Good.

Claire wanted to become ordinary again.

Ordinary had become luxurious.
