Chapter 3 - THE VIDEO DANIEL THOUGHT WOULD SAVE HIM
Police arrived.
Then paramedics.
Then questions.
Claire’s hand had a superficial burn and bruising.
No severe injury.
Still documented.
Daniel said:
“She attacked me first.”
Linda agreed.
Harold agreed.
All three told nearly the same story.
Claire became hysterical.
Claire ruined dinner.
Claire threatened Daniel.
Daniel restrained her.
Private thugs invaded the house.
Good.
They had rehearsed a family language without realizing it.
Then Detective Mara Lewis asked for the home-security footage.
Daniel looked confident.
That worried Claire.
The footage showed Claire in the kitchen.
But not the whole kitchen.
The stove angle was partially blocked by Daniel’s body.
Audio quality poor.
Then Daniel’s lawyer pointed to another clip from earlier that afternoon.
Claire arguing with Linda.
Claire saying:
“I am done being treated like garbage in this house.”
Linda:
“You sound unstable.”
Claire:
“Maybe I should burn this whole family arrangement down.”
Bad phrase.
Metaphor.
But ugly on video.
Daniel smiled when he heard it replayed.
He had saved the exact sentence.
Claire stared.
There.
He had been waiting.
Then Calder Risk produced something Daniel did not expect.
Body-worn cameras.
All four security men had activated them before entry.
The footage captured:
Claire on the floor,
Daniel crouched over her,
his hand gripping her chin,
the stove lit,
Linda laughing,
Harold seated,
Daniel saying:
“—I use the other hand.”
Clear.
Then the entry.
Then Daniel:
“Get off my property, old man”—no, wrong story. Here: “Who the hell are you?!”
Then his resistance.
Then Claire stopping the guard before any hand touched the stove.
That mattered.
Daniel’s story cracked.
Then Maya asked police to preserve all house-camera devices.
Because Claire had another suspicion.
The cameras were not for security.
