Chapter 5 - THE FILE CALLED CLAIRE

Police obtained a warrant for Daniel’s office laptop after evidence of potential domestic violence and deletion of relevant video.

A folder appeared.

CLAIRE.

Inside:

screenshots,

audio clips,

calendar notes,

photos of broken objects,

records of arguments,

emails sent to himself after fights.

Some were real.

Claire had yelled.

Claire had thrown a wineglass into the sink once.

Claire had called Linda “a poisonous old woman.”

Claire had threatened divorce.

None of that made Daniel’s violence acceptable.

But the file was dangerous because it contained truth selectively.

Then one note:

If she escalates in front of witnesses, do not engage. Let her show herself.

Date:

three weeks before the dinner.

Another:

Mom agrees dinner may be best environment.

Claire stopped breathing.

Maya read again.

Dinner may be best environment.

Was the steak incident planned?

Not necessarily.

Then messages.

LINDA:

She always loses it when embarrassed.

DANIEL:

I just need people to see it.

LINDA:

Harold will back you.

There.

Not proof Daniel planned to burn her hand.

Proof he planned to provoke a scene.

Then Harold:

Enough of her drama. Finish this before quarter end.

Quarter end?

What did that mean?

Financial records answered.

Daniel was negotiating a buyout of his construction company by a regional developer.

If he divorced before closing, Claire could have marital claims tied to part of his equity.

If she signed a separation agreement first—or could be pressured into one—Daniel could lock valuation terms earlier.

Then draft separation papers appeared.

Claire would receive:

$75,000 cash,

no claim to company sale proceeds,

waive housing reserve,

and leave Bennett residence within thirty days.

Claire laughed.

Her legal marital claim might be several times that.

Then one internal note from Daniel to his lawyer:

If she refuses, instability documentation should help.

There.

The dinner was not only cruelty.

It was pressure inside a timeline.
